1. O you whose quest in this world is the fulfillment of desires,

    take counsel from one who offers up its jewels.

  2. Do not undertake a deed if you do not know its outcome;

    the goodness of deeds lies hidden in their endings.

  3. Nor be rash in a matter, beside yourself with passion;

    arm yourself with patience against its outward appearances.

  4. Ask, and consult a man of reason and experience

    about events—their past and their present.

  5. If you make your way through the days relying

    on these counsels, you will escape their perils.
