1. من الأحبة أم من طيب ربعهم

    وافيت يا عاطر الأرواح بالنسم

    From the loved ones, O fragrant of spirits with the breeze

    Or from the folds of that dune you came

  2. أم من ثنيات ذياك الكثيب أت

    نوافح الطيب أم من نشر طيبهم

    The scent of perfume wafted, or did their sweetness spread?

    My tears were quenched one day when fond memories

  3. سقى الحمى مدمعي يوما تذكرني

    به النسيم بريّا نفحة الخزم

    Were stirred by the zephyr's purity, redolent breath of meadowsweet

    By Allah! Call on that lively settlement, then invite

  4. ويا حمى اللَه ذاك الحيّ ثم دعا

    مخضل مربعه بالأمن والسلم

    To a perfumed, well-fortified abode of safety and peace

    My pacts with it I kept hoping the winds would whisper to me

  5. فلي عهود به قد بت أرقبها

    عسى الرياح تهاديني بنشرهم

    At the dwellings of Arabs - whenever I recalled them

    My heart was rent by lovers with piercing throes

  6. وبالمنازل عرب ما ذكرتهم

    إلّا وعدت من الأشجان ذا ألم

    How often I was tempted by them in days when we were close!

    With every lithe and slender-waisted one who freely

  7. لهنّ في كبدي طعنات ذي حور

    وكم فتنت بهم أيام قربهم

    Shed my blood, slaying those who spilled my tears

    Hail, my announcer! If you come to me at dawn

  8. من كل أهيف ممشوق القوام له

    فتك بالحاظه اللاتي سفكن دمي

    When the settlement's breeze blows, then spread

    Abundantly my fervent longing in harmonious verse

  9. يا صاح إن جئت فياح الحمى سحرا

    فانشر من الشوق منثوراً بمنتظم

    Hail the ruins - yes, yes - how excellent are those places I frequented!

    Let the lively settlement's youth pause by those hills

  10. وحيّ أطلال نعما نعم ما ضمنت

    من كل العس المي الغر مبتسم

    And convey the greetings of one blamed by none

    Ask those maidens about the heart that loved them

  11. ويمم الحي من تلك الطلول وقف

    واقرأ تحية صبّ غير متهم

    Did it sleep in their land or wander, sick with yearning?

    What is the way when death has razed our holy places?

  12. وسل بتلك الربى عن قلب عاشقها

    هل نام في ربعها أم هام بالأكم

    Or how can I solace myself when my heart still craves them?

    By Allah! From the day their lands drew far apart from ours

  13. كيف السبيل وقد شط المزار بنا

    أم كيف اسلو ولي قلب بحيهم

    My heart held a fire fuelled by our separation

    God help a lonely stranger, restless, hollow-eyed,

  14. بذمة اللَه من ناءت ديارهم

    عنا وفي كبدي نار لبعدهم

    His tears flowing like sap down his wounded lids

    Time stretched out its palm to oppress him and came upon him

  15. للَه صبّ غريب نازحٌ قلقٌ

    مقرّح الجفن يجري الدمع كالعنم

    With its evil, though he walked with haste

    My lifetime has been unjust, observing no code for me

  16. مد الزمان له كف الخطوب وقد

    وافاه في كيده يسعى على القدم

    Save that of oppression - we shared nothing but injustice

    If a youth has no luck to aid him he gets no use

  17. وجار دهري ولم يرع لنا حكما

    ولم يكن بيننا غبنٌ سوى الحكم

    From fine words or books - nothing helps unless destiny favours

    By Allah! My burning entrails melt with sorrow

  18. إن لم يكن للفتى حظ يقوم به

    فليس ينفعه مستحسن الكلم

    Till anguish rules them - what arbitrator can judge this?

    My heart that wasted over passion, patience!

  19. ولا العلوم ولا الآداب نافعة

    سوى الحظوظ فكل جاء كالعدم

    You grew no tumour - you were never fat

    I may meet again those whose settlement's scent I treasured

  20. للَه من كبد حرّى تذوب أسى

    تحكم الوجد فيها أي محتكم

    And gain, though a dream's illusion, their company

    Our bygone days may yet return one day

  21. ويا فؤادي الذي قد ذاب من وله

    صبرا فإنك ما استسمنت ذا ورم

    Though my heart once told me: have done with loving ghosts and ruins

    Consider her outstanding in beauty - she seemed to be

  22. لعل من بت أرعى طيب معهدهم

    أفوز في أمل يوما بظلهم

    Moulded for the sublime long ago

    I died of love for her and if she abandoned me

  23. وعلّ أيامنا اللاتي سلفن لنا

    تعود يوما ولو في طارق الحلم

    I had no peace or pact to break

    I saw no solace without her smiling

  24. ورب يوم بدا قلبي يخاطبني

    دع التغزل بالأشباح والرمم

    She is always recalled by my lips

    A sorceress whose glances slay hearts

  25. وانظر لمختارة بالحسن قد خطرت

    كأنها للعلى طبع من القدم

    Who captivated Ibn Qasim and the songstress Sophia

    Our Junblatt whom the Arabs and non-Arabs agreed

  26. أنا القتيل بها حبّا وان هجرت

    فما سلوت ولا عهدي بمنفصم

    In praising - when the bard acclaimed:

    "This is Bashir - virtue and nobility's Bashir"

  27. ولا رايت سلوا لا ومبسمها

    ولم يزل كل آن ذكرها بفم

    Elders' Shaykh - though the days have whitened his cheeks

    His glory makes Time count as part

  28. سحارة اللحظ بالألباب فاتكة

    فتك ابن قاسم والهيجاء في ضرم

    Of his magnificence, cheeks rosy, marked with moles

    The opinions he taught serve us instead of

  29. بشيرنا الجنبلاطي الذي شهدت

    له المحامد من عرب ومن عجم

    Swords and pens for the astute

    His achievements show his spirit's nobility

  30. غدا له شرفا إذ قال قائله

    هذا البشير بشير الفضل والكرم

    And the clouds his hands release shower harmoniously

    As if his palm in generosity pours a stream

  31. شيخ الشيوخ وإن شاخ الزمان يعد

    من مجده أحمر الخدين ذا شمم

    From the oceans and pools of munificence

    How often he made peace and how often his resolve

  32. فهو الذي علّمت اراؤه وغدت

    تغني عن المرهفين السيف والقلم

    Perplexed Time with its own tribulations!

    Valiant, undaunted among warriors, praising him,

  33. مهذب معلم تحكي مآثره

    زهر النجوم سنيٌّ عاطر الشيم

    The meadows witnessed his reckless courage

    A terrifying lion - ask his sword about him

  34. تروي معالمه عن عز همته

    وسحب كفيه منهلّ بمنسجم

    In battle, and his stricken foes' hacked limbs

    Noble, excelling in generosity, bounty and gifts

  35. كأن في كفه إذ جاد وابله

    فيضا من الأجودين البحر والديم

    Learned, nurtured in perfection's bosom

    His will for excellence tireless and unsleeping

  36. فكم له يوم سلم من مسالمة

    وكم له يوم هم الدهر من همم

    His virtues always lovingly confirm him

    Allah showed his fine attributes He built for us

  37. شهم همام لدى الهيجاء قد شهدت

    له المواضي على إقدام كل كمي

    In the best Beauty transcending any throne

    Her orbit vied with stars - did she appear

  38. غضنفر أروع ان سل صارمه

    في مهمه فالعدا لحم على وضم

    A radiant Canopus in a clear design?

    Her exalted mansion with its might seems like the bow

  39. أو هزّ لدنا ترى الأعداء هاربة

    ما بين منسفج منهم ومنهزم

    Of that famed house, the Lion mansion in the sky

    O refuge of the lofty, lord of this settlement

  40. كريم أصل تسامى بالثنا كرما

    لما يواليه من جود ومن نعم

    Guard her sanctuary from all nations!

    Abodes graced with beauty - Bashir adorned them

  41. مثقف شبّ في حجر الكمال له

    عزم عن الفضل لم يفتر ولم ينم

    Scholar son of the peerless learned man

    O you who are the moon whose gleam none can hide

  42. وصادقته المعالي وهي باسمةٌ

    تهتز حبا له كالشارب النهم

    How can the light be hidden that shines in knowledge?

    I am one whose verse was tender lover's talk

  43. للَه آيات حسن قد أشاد لنا

    في خير مختارة تسمو على أرم

    And your praise made my gain seem good

    So let your noble spirit's compassion embrace

  44. حاكت دوائر أفلا مطالعها

    أو كالثريا بدت حسنا بمرتسم

    A slave who came to shelter in your shadow

    I may gain from your care victory over fate

  45. كأن أيوانها السامي بعزته

    قوس لدارة برج الليث فيما سمي

    And cure by it the sickness of my soul

    May your good fortune and the sublime forever cling together

  46. مختارة للعلي صاح النزيل بها

    ردوا حمى امنها يا معشر الامم

    And may the raincloud of your glory soak each thirsty land

    To you I dedicate the bride of my verse's creation

  47. منازل قد زهت حسنا وزينها

    بشيرها العلم ابن المفرد العلم

    Praising this high-climbing bloom, O keeper of pacts!

    She is graceful, conveying in her prayer and praise for you

  48. يا من هو البدر لا تخفى اشعته

    وكيف يخفى ضياء لاح في علم

    A sweet clarity at the start and close

  49. إني امرء بثنا أوصافكم غزلي

    وفي محامدكم قد طاب مغتنمي

  50. فاشمل بعاطفة الأفضال عبدك من

    أتى يلوذ بكم يا خير محتشم

  51. لعلّ عاطفة منكم أحوز بها

    نصراً على الدهر يستشفى بها سقمي

  52. لا زال سعدك بالعلياء مقترنا

    وغيث مجدك يروي حر كل ظمي

  53. إليك أهدي عروس المدح مبتكرا

    سناء نظم زها يا وافي الذمم

  54. هيفاء تهدي في دعاء بالثناء لكم

    معطرا لاح في بدء ومختتم
