From the pain deep within, the eye sheds tears;
And from its sorrows, the heart releases groans.
This abode is no abode of joy, nor
A dwelling where pleasures endure for humankind.
How can there be safety in a dwelling whose very nature is
That neither armies nor lords endure within it?
You hope for serenity from Time, though it is turbid;
Can seasons of clarity be hoped for from murk’s own brother?
Leave Time alone, and be on your guard against it;
For Time makes raids upon its own people.
It shot an arrow into my liver and split me apart;
And Time contains both joys and heartbreaks.
And God has wisdoms among all these creatures:
Joy has its hour, while sorrows have their times.
Alas for death! It has gone too far and betrayed,
Striking a full moon of virtue, haloed by letters.
The master of eloquence, ʿAbd Allāh—when he was lost,
Through his loss those eloquent arts came to an end.
He who made understanding and knowledge flow,
And beneficence—whose deeds the virtues recounted.
Whenever we recall his qualities, there surges within us
A grief that makes us weep, while afflictions stir us anew.
When he died—he, the ruby of penmanship—
Pangs made my tears stream from my eyelids.
Alas! She was stricken in the apple of her eye—
The mother of the reed pen; composition itself has pangs of grief.
How often his pens cast pearls,
And missives wore those pearls as necklaces.
How often, upon the cheek of paper, from his hand
The lām-letters gloried in his wondrous script.
Never did his fingers play with a pen
But that they fashioned polished Mashrafī swords.
When his death-announcer came to the people, the letters wept in sorrow—
Dāls and mīms drawn by the reed pen.
He was the finest generous man—indeed, a munificent youth;
At his hand, people’s needs were fulfilled.
O star seized by the hands of eclipse,
You vanished, and those lights were veiled.
O brilliant master who came to rest in earth, though he held
Among humankind radiant, exalted ranks.
I shall weep for you throughout my days, aided by
The reed pen’s lament, while eloquence weeps for you.
Alas for you! After you, my heart
Passes its nights in a cradle of afflictions and sorrows.
I would never have chosen that Time bereave me
Of one whose aspirations sought to win virtue.
O soul, bear this calamity patiently: no
Grief endures, nor have joys ever endured.
Cling to the bonds of piety, steadfast
In righteousness—for all people must die.
He has indeed journeyed from the abode of cares into
An abode where purity, companionship, and pleasures dwell.
Enjoying bliss that never passes,
Enfolded in mercies from the All-Merciful’s good pleasure.
And in his two brothers lies the finest consolation;
Indeed, in them is recompense—and increase besides.
Those two brilliant, noble men, in whom appeared
Signs from the radiant light of their splendid merit.
May God favor them amid honor, while unceasingly
Glory and joys grow upon them.
