O thief of sleep from my eyes—what plunder!
Enough for you: you have kindled the flame in our very depths
with the arrows of your radiant eye—woe is me!
And who will rescue me when I cry, “Woe is me!”
You knew that I was a man of yearning, possessed by passion;
so you began to toy with me—how strange; oh, what a wonder!
Torment enough for my heart, whether you yield or
withhold, O full moon: I have not attained my desire.
You two have led me, O my eye and O my heart,
into this passion—so taste its honey and its froth.
