بلبل يشدو ويصدح

في رياض الأنس يسرح

The nightingale sings and cries out

In the gardens of companionship it roams

وشقيق الروض يزهو

وعبير الزهر ينفح

And the meadow's partner blossoms

And the scent of flowers wafts

ونسيم الشوق ينشي

من شذا الحب ويشرح

And the breeze of longing arises

From the splendor of love and explains

وغزال زاد حسنا

بكحيل الطرف يجرح

And a gazelle increased in beauty

With kohl of the eyelid it wounds

ينثني كالغصن عطفا

وعلى الخطيّ يرجح

It bends like a branch in kindness

And it favors the slim one

ريقه كالشهد يحلو

من فم الصب المقرّح

Its saliva is sweet like honey

From the mouth of the crisp youth

ليته بالقرب يوما

لقتيل الشوق يسمح

If only one day it would

To the victim of longing be lenient

قد أطال الهجر عمدا

وغدا بالصد يمرح

Indeed prolonged separation intentionally

And with coldness it plays

قلت لما جاء يسعى

بسيوف اللحظ يذبح

I said when he came seeking

With the swords of glances he slaughters

ان لي من حرّ هجر

منهلا عذبا مطفح

That I have from the heat of separation

A sweet overflowing spring

اسعديّا ذا خلال

نشرها يزكو ويمدح

Happy am I with feature

It blossoms and praises

عذب ذوق مرّ جدّ

ليس للفحشاء يطمح

Sweet tasting bitter separation

It does not aspire to vulgarity

وبه الأيام تحلو

وبه العلياء تفرح

And with it days become sweet

And with it the noble rejoice

وعليّ في مقام

أسعديّ ليس يبرح

And I am in a state

Of happiness that does not quit

قد سما برج المعالي

وعلى الجوزاء يربح

Indeed ascended the tower of glory

And Capricorn it profits

كوكب في بيت سعد

وبه الآمال تنجح

A planet in the House of Happiness

And through it hopes succeed

هو غوثٌ راحتاه

بالندى كالغيث تمنح

It is a relief its tranquility

With dew like rain it grants

حاتم بالجود لكن

كفه بالبذل اسمح

Hatim in generosity but

Its palm in giving is more generous

ليس يلقى منه شاك

غير بيت المال يجدح

It meets no complainant

Other than the treasury it strikes

وبحرب ليث فتكٍ

بكعوب جاء يرمح

And in battle a vicious lion

With heels it came stabbing

وعلى الأعداء يعدو

بزناد الطعن يقدح

And upon the enemies it charges

With the spark of stab it ignites

فوق طود من جياد

سابق كالبرق يلمح

Above a towering thoroughbred

Fast like lightning it glimpses

مانح الأضداد قهرا

وعن الزلات يصفح

Vanquisher of opponents forcibly

And from mistakes it forgives

ضيغم تخشاه أسدٌ

وعلى العافين يجنح

A wolf fears it

And to the healthy it inclines

يا عليا بأياد

نلت منها خير مربح

O most high with hands

You attained well-earned profit

بنت فكر لك تجلى

بقبول منك فامنح

A thought was revealed to you

With your acceptance so grant

بطرس بالمدح وافى
