1. مرحباً مرحباً بربة خالِ

    صانها الحسن بين عمٍ وخالِ

    Welcome, welcome, lady of the beauty mark!

    Beauty guarded her between paternal uncle and maternal uncle.

  2. أقبلت تنجلي وفي معطفيها

    من بديع البديع فرط الدلالِ

    She came forward, unveiling herself, and within her two mantles

    bore an excess of coy grace fashioned from rhetoric’s finest wonders.

  3. قد روانا الورديّ عن وجنتيها

    ما روانا عن ثغرها ابن هلالِ

    Al-Wardi has related to us concerning her cheeks

    what Ibn Hilal related concerning her mouth.

  4. من بنات الأفكارِ يصبو إليها

    حين تجلى أخو الحجى والكمالِ

    A daughter of thought, for whom the heart yearns

    when the brother of wisdom and perfection stands revealed.

  5. جاء مكحول جفنها بحديثٍ

    قد رواه عن العيون الكحالِ

    The kohl-dark rim of her eyelid brought a report

    which the oculist narrated from the eyes.

  6. نعم بكرٌ من الكرامة سادت

    فأتت مربع الكرام الموالي

    How fine—a virgin daughter of Karama who attained mastery

    and came to the dwelling of noble friends.

  7. وسرت في الجهات شرقاً وغرباً

    فوق متن القبول والإقبال

    She traveled through every region, east and west,

    borne upon the back of acceptance and favor.

  8. ثم عادت من العراق إلينا

    بعد بينٍ مشمولةً بالنوالِ

    Then she returned to us from Iraq,

    after separation, enveloped in gifts.

  9. قد حباها موسى الشريف وإبرا

    هيمُ يحيى عقدَيْ بَها وجمالِ

    Musa al-Sharif bestowed upon her, and Ibra—

    —him Yahya, two necklaces of radiance and beauty.

  10. خمساها بل شرفاها بعقدِ

    ذي معانٍ أزرت بعقد اللآلي

    They made her fivefold—rather, honored her—with a necklace

    of meanings that put strings of pearls to shame.

  11. لست أدري هل سمطاها بشعرٍ

    أخجل الدر أم بسحرٍ حلالِ

    I cannot tell: did her two strands, through your verse,

    put pearls to shame—or is your sorcery lawful?

  12. إن موسى قد أبطل السحر قبلا

    ونراه أتى بسحر المقالِ

    Moses did indeed defeat sorcery long ago,

    yet here we see him bringing the magic of speech.

  13. وعجيباً قد أخمد النار إبراهيم

    قدماً وفضله ذو اشتعالِ

    Stranger still: Abraham once extinguished the fire,

    while his own excellence remains aflame.

  14. حبذا حبذا العراق وما فيه

    من المجد والسنا والمعالي

    How fair, how fair is Iraq and all within it—

    its glory, splendor, and lofty eminence!

  15. قام فيه لكل فنٍ خطيبٌ

    صادحٌ في منابر الآمالِ

    In it, every art has found an orator,

    singing from the pulpits of hope.

  16. وغدا للعلوم في كل عصرٍ

    فلكاً مشرقاً بزهر الرجالِ

    In every age it has become, for learning,

    a radiant firmament blossoming with the flower of men.

  17. أيها النيران في فلك الفضل

    كما ازهرت نجوم الشمالِ

    O twin luminaries in the firmament of merit,

    as the northern stars blossom in radiance!

  18. ليس بدعاً وانتما وارثا الآداب

    والعلم عن جدودٍ وآلِ

    It is no marvel, since you two inherited letters

    and learning from forefathers and family.

  19. غزلي فيكما ثناءً ومدحاً

    لا بعين المها وجيد الغزالِ

    My ghazal for you is praise and commendation,

    not a song of oryx eyes and a gazelle’s neck.

  20. أنني والهوى على البعد صبٌ

    قانعٌ منكم بطيف الخيالِ

    For I, though far away, am love’s ardent captive,

    content with nothing of you but imagination’s phantom.

  21. إن شوقي إليكم شوق حرٍّ

    ذي وفاءٍ يهوى كريم الخصالِ

    My longing for you is the longing of a free man,

    a faithful soul who loves nobility of character.

  22. أصبح القلب سالياً بهواكم

    ما تلقاه من صروف الليالي

    Through love of you, the heart has grown oblivious

    to all it suffers from the vicissitudes of the nights.

  23. إن يكنب يننا انفصالٌ ففي

    الحب الحب انفصال الحبيب عين اتصالِ

    If separation should lie between us, then in

    love—love!—separation from the beloved is union itself.

  24. وإذا لم تكن رأتكم عيوني

    فرأكم فكري بعين المثالِ

    And though my eyes have never seen you,

    my mind has seen you with the eye of the ideal.

  25. أو تمادى بينٌ ولم يك وصلٌ

    ففؤادي عن حبكم غير سالِ

    Though distance lengthen and no meeting come,

    my heart will never forget its love for you.

  26. دمتما كوكبيُ علومٍ أضاءَت

    منكما الفضل في سنا الأفضالِ

    May you endure, twin stars of learning, shining—

    through you, excellence gleams in the radiance of bounty—

  27. ما تعنت ورقٌ وبات شجيٌّ

    تحت ذيل الرجا لنيل الوصالِ

    as long as the wood-dove sings and the heartsick one spends the night

    beneath hope’s hem, seeking to attain reunion.
