1. أقبلت تنجلي وتسحب ذيلاً

    ذات قدٍّ يميس تيهاً ودلا

    She came swaying, dragging her train

    A tall, wandering, lost gazelle

  2. غادة تفتن الظباءَ بجيدٍ

    وغصون النقا اهتزازاً وميلا

    Gada enchants the deer with her neck

    And sways the branches of the nabk-tree

  3. اطلعت كوكب الصباح لدينا

    من جبين عل الجمال تولى

    The morning star rose over us

    From the forehead of the one with perfect beauty

  4. أخت بدرٍ رقت حديثاً وخصراً

    فاسترقت منا جناناً وعقلا

    A full moon softly rose and a slender waist

    Which stole hearts and minds from us

  5. وغذتنا فجرد القدُّ رمحاً

    سمهريّا واشهر الطرف نصلا

    It sharpened the spear into a poisonous blade

    And unsheathed its piercing glance

  6. يا لقومي من ذات تيهٍ سبتني

    بالتجني وليس تنصف خلا

    Oh my people! What a lost gazelle has tempted me

    With her glances, though she is unjust in her seclusion

  7. ظبية من ظباء لبنان لا من

    ظبياتٍ ترعى بعسفان رملا

    A gazelle from the gazelles of Lebanon, not one

    That grazes on the gravel plains of Afsan

  8. شغلتني وكنت قبلاً خليّا

    فدعتني لا استطيعنَ شغلا

    She distracted me though I was solitary before

    And made me unable to think of anything else

  9. من مجيري من لحظها حين يرنو

    يجفون يرشن سحراً ونبلا

    Those who gaze at her, their eyelids

    Flutter, sprinkle magic and throw arrows

  10. أطرباني بذكرها يا نديميّ

    وزيدا ولز ملاما وعدا

    She delighted me, my friend, increase

    And do not rebuke, make excuses and count the days

  11. يا مهاة لها لحشاشة مرعى

    عمركِ اللَه قد فتكت فمها

    Oh she has the mischief of a pasture

    May your life last, her mouth has ravaged

  12. أتقي اللَه في فواد حليمٍ

    صيرته عيناك مجنون

    Fear God regarding the heart of this forbearing man

    Your eyes have maddened him

  13. إن بعدي يا ميُّ انحل جسمي

    وفؤادي بنار هجرك يصلي

    After me, oh Mayyu, my body will dissipate

    And my heart burned with the fire of your abandonment will pray

  14. لا تظني البعاد مني سلّوا

    أو جفاءً أو أن قلبي ملّا

    Do not think my distance is diversion

    Or disdain, or that my heart is weary

  15. لا وحبيك ما سلوت ولكن

    قد رأيت الصدود أبقى وأولى

    No, but my love for you is undiminished

    But I saw aloofness is best and more appropriate

  16. ان لحظيك عاهداني على أن

    لا أطيع السلوان جدّاً وهزلا

    For your glances made me pledge

    Not to obey the jesters seriously or lightly

  17. لست أنسى أيام أنسٍ تقضت

    وليالٍ مضينَ يا ميُّ وصلا

    I will not forget the days of intimacy that have passed

    And the nights of connection, oh Mayyu, and union

  18. هزني ذكرها الطروب غراماً

    كاهتزازي لمدح أعظم مولى

    The memory of her shook me with passion

    Like my shivering in praise of the Greatest Master

  19. الشهابي البشير رب المعالي

    والهمام الشهير جوداً وعدلا

    Al-Shihabi, the eminent, the Lord of High Status

    And the protector famed for his generosity and justice

  20. سيد المجد والمكارم شهم

    ذو أيادٍ تحكي السحائب نيلا

    The leader of glory and magnanimity, august

    With hands that tell the clouds to rain

  21. جهبذ غنمهُ الثناءُ فاضحت

    لعلاه ذرى السماك محلا

    The intrepid one whom praise has enriched

    To the point that he filled the orbits with his prestige

  22. بدر صدر العلاء قد أخذ الحس

    ن تماماً وبالكمال تحلى

    The full moon whose perfection of discernment

    Has taken excellence and perfection entirely

  23. حازم ذو عزيمة تخجل السي

    ف مضاءً وتجعل الحزن سهلا

    The resolute one whose determination puts to shame

    The keenest blade and turns sorrow into ease

  24. ماجدٌ ساد همةً ومقاما

    وتسامى فتكاً وحلماً وبذلا

    The glorious one whose ambition and status were raised

    And his valor and clemency and generosity exalted

  25. أسد يقهر الأسود إذا ما

    سل سيفاً أو هزّ للحرب ذبلا

    The lion who defeats the lions when

    He unsheathes his sword or rouses them for war

  26. كم كمي أرداه يوم نزالٍ

    وخميس من فتك يمناه ولّى

    How many hosts did he defeat in battle

    And Khamis in his strikes made them retreat

  27. يا رعى اللَه بيت دين التهاني

    وسقاها الحياءُ طلّاً ووبلا

    Oh may God protect the house of congratulations

    And water it with shyness and tender downpour

  28. فاخرت بالبشير كل محلٍّ

    واستعزت به جمالاً ونبلا

    Every abode prided itself on Al-Bashir

    And was honored by him with beauty and nobility

  29. يا كريماً طابت بطيب ثناه

    فنحات الأزهارِ أيان يتلى

    Oh generous one! The flowers bloom with your fragrance

    When will your excellences be recited?

  30. تتهنى بخلعةٍ ذات سعدٍ

    ودلالٍ لم ترضى غيرك أهلا

    It takes pride in a garment of good fortune

    And intimacy which none were worthy of but you

  31. بنت عزٍّ تنال منك سموّاً

    ما تمادى الزمان حولاً فحولا

    The daughter of honor attains from you

    A loftiness, however long the days revolve

  32. تتثنى إلى لقاك وتهتزُّ

    كصب أدار ذكر الاخلا

    She inclines towards meeting you and trembles

    Like a lover who turned his rein remembering the ruins

  33. زادك اللَه سودداً وسعوداً

    وهناءً وزادك اللَه فضلا

    May God increase your intimacy and good fortune

    And happiness and increase you in merit

  34. خذ بعفو فتاة فكر تدانت

    من عبيد تهدي من المدح فصلا

    Excuse a young lady whose thoughts have been humbled

    By this praise - and she sends the chosen part

  35. وتهنّى بخلعةٍ أرخوها

    دم سليماً دامت لعلياك تجلى

    And is honored by a garment she lowered

    With a sincere pledge - may your glory last forever
