    From the foothills of Lebanon, O breeze, or from the tail of Lebanon

    You have stirred my passion and sorrows

  2. كيف المنازل هل من بعدنا ابتسمت

    ثغورها البيض عن در ومرجان

    How are the dwellings, have they smiled after us?

    Their white gaps about pearls and coral

  3. وهل كعهدي على الأفنان صادحة

    ورق الرياض بتغريد وألحان

    And are they, as they used to be, calling loudly

    On the branches, the rustling of leaves and melodies

  4. حييت لبنان من طود يباكره

    ودق الغمام بهطالٍ وهتان

    You have greeted Lebanon from a dawning mountain

    And the clouds stroke it with downpour and affection

  5. حكى الجنان بأنهار مدفقةٍ

    شهداً يفيض لدى حور وولدان

    The gardens narrated, with gushing rivers

    Witnesses overflowing around houris and lads

  6. دارت به جاريات الماء ساقية

    مثل السواقي تجارت بين ندمان

    The streams of water circled around it serving

    Like butlers circulating among boon companions

  7. تشبُّ نارانِ فيه من قرى وهوى

    بين المرابع من أسدٍ وغزلان

    Two fires in it ignite from villages and passion

    Among the pastures, from lion and gazelle

  8. تحمي جفون الظبا أحيأه وترى

    ظبأه تقتل الأحيا بأجفان

    Protecting the eyelids of the deer, it brought it to life and saw

    Its deer killing the living with glances

  9. تقاسم الفتك أهلوه فأصبح في

    لحاظ غيدٍ وفي أسياف فتيان

    They shared the havoc, its people made it

    In the hands of an unsheathed sword and the arms of horsemen

  10. حكت قدود غوانيه مرنحة

    رماح فرسانه يا خجلة البان

    The creaking bows of its young women related

    The spears of its horsemen, O what a disgraceful separation

  11. أمسي واصبح ذا وجدٍ يواصلني

    منه فيهجرني صبري وسلواني

    I spent the night and morning with an affection continuing with me

    In separating from me, my patience and tranquility left me

  12. لم أنسَ لم أنسَ أياماً به سلفت

    قضيتها بين أحبابٍ وخلان

    I have not forgotten, I have not forgotten the days I spent

    Living them among loved ones and parting

  13. مضت وأبقت لنا في القلب باقية

    تبث بين الحشا أنفاس نيران

    They have passed and left remaining in the heart

    Sparks spreading fragrance between the encampments

  14. باللَه يا مشرق الأقمار هل نباءٌ

    عن ساكن الغرب يشفي قلب ولهان

    By God, O sun of the moons, is there news

    About the dweller of the west that comforts a withering heart

  15. غصنٌ من البان يعلو فوقه قمرٌ

    ظبي بلبنان لا ظبيٌ بعسفان

    A branch from acacia rising above it a moon

    A Lebanese deer, not a deer of the flatlands

  16. بذمة اللَه ذات الخال أن لها

    عهداً يدوم على وصل وهجران

    By God's covenant, that smooth cheeked one has

    A covenant lasting with union and separation

  17. وهنانة لا يزال الدل يصحبها

    لحاظها وسيوف الهند مثلان

    The evidence is still accompanying her

    Her cheek and the Indian swords are similar

  18. بمهجتي أفتدي بدراً بساحله

    مهفهفاً مثلما أهواه يهواني

    With my life I ransom a full moon on its coast

    Fluttering as the one I love makes me flutter

  19. مكحل الطرف من سحرٍ ومن حورٍ

    مطرز الخد من وردٍ وريحان

    Kohl in the eyelid out of magic and houris

    Rose cheeks embroidered with roses and basil

  20. الحاظه سكرت من خمر ريقته

    فغازلتنا بفتاكٍ وفتان

    The pillow intoxicated from the wine of his saliva

    So it flirted with us with havoc and allurement

  21. يا أسم لا جزعي إن بات يبعدني

    عنك الزمان فإن الشوق أدناني

    O name, do not worry if time distances me

    From you, for longing brings me closer

  22. سقى زمانك يا أسماءُ صوب حياً

    فإنه كان عندي خير أزمان

    Your time, O Asma, watered a beloved life

    For it was in my eyes the best of times

  23. عصرٌ سعدنا به وقتاً كما سعدت

    أم العلى بأميرٍ ما له ثان

    An era we were happy in, as Umm Al-Ala was happy

    With a prince peerless and matchless

  24. نعم الأمين وذو الفضل الثمين ومن

    بالذات يعرب عن حسن وإحسان

    What an excellent trustee, of great merit, and one who

    Expresses goodness and favor through his essence

  25. مولىً من الشهب تحكيها مآثره

    كما روت نسباً عن آل عدنان

    My Master, his glories the meteors relate

    As they related the lineage of the Aadnan family

  26. بدر الملاحة بل صدر الفصاحة بل

    بحر السماحة بل طعان فرسانِ

    Full moon of sailing, no, breast of eloquence, no

    Sea of generosity, no, a piercing horseman

  27. مهذبٌ لم يشنه غير جود يدٍ

    تهمي من البذل سحباناً بسحبان

    Refined, none corrupted him but the generosity of a hand

    That bestows clouds of generosity with clouds

  28. ينظم الدر في سلكٍ ويرسلهُ

    شعراً يتيه على منظوم حسان

    He strings pearls in a necklace and sends it

    As poetry wandering in well-composed verse

  29. وإن نضا صارماً في يوم معركةٍ

    يفرق الجمع من خيلٍ وركبانِ

    And if he unsheathes a sharp sword in a battle day

    He splits the crowd of horse and rider

  30. واللَه ما راق لي من بعد فرقته

    انسٌ ولا راق لي شهمٌ بديوان

    By God, since his separation no intimacy pleases me

    Nor pleases me audacity in the councils

  31. قلبي لديك أمين الحب مرتهنٌ

    وأنت تعلم أسراري وإعلاني

    My heart is a lover's hostage with you

    And you know my secrets and my expressions

  32. شرفتني بكتابٍ دام مرسلهُ

    شفى الفؤاد وحياني فأحياني

    You have honored me with a letter lasting as its sender

    Healing the heart and enlivening me, so he gave me life

  33. الفاظهُ دررٌ جأت على غررٍ

    من المعاني فانست ذكر سحبانٍ

    Its words are pearls set upon pearls

    Of meanings, making me forget the clouds

  34. ما بين نظم رقيقٍ يسترق لهُ

    حر البديع ونثرٌ سحر تبيانِ

    Between refined poetry that furtively steals

    The essence of rhetoric, and magic eloquence of prose

  35. خذها لهُ يا أمير المجد جاريةً

    رقيقةً بسمت عن در عقيانِ

    Take it to him, O Prince of Glory, a delicate

    Young girl smiling with pearls of the gum resin tree

  36. وافتك قاصرةً خجلانةً فلذا

    مقصورة الطرف كانت خدها قاني

    And capture her bashful and shy, so for that

    Her eyelids were veiled, her cheek reddened

  37. فامدد إليها يداً بالعفو تحملها

    يا ابن البشير الذي كفاه بحرانِ

    So stretch out to her a forgiving hand that carries her

    O son of the preacher, the sea sufficed him

  38. شهم حليف المعالي عند همته

    حرب الزمان وسلم الدهر سيان

    The bold ally of glory in his ambition

    And war of time and peace of fate are equal

  39. عزيز نفسٍ كريمٌ لا يغيره

    وقع الحوادث أو تبديل أوطان

    A dear soul, generous, unchanged

    By the blows of fate or change of homelands

  40. كأنهُ البدر لا تخفى بوارقهُ

    والبدر يشرق من قاصٍ ومن دانِ

    As if he is the full moon, his bright aspects do not hide

    And the full moon rises from a bow or quiver

  41. ما حاجهُ منصبٌ حتى يسود بهِ

    بل ساد طبعاً بمعروفٍ وعرفان

    He has no need of office so he can rule by it

    But ruled by nature, by favor and knowledge

  42. فيا لهُ من أميرٍ طاب مرتفعاً

    سنأوهُ بين ساداتٍ وعبدان

    So excellent a prince, pure his elevation

    We will solicit him among lords and servants

  43. أدامهُ اللَه والأنجال ما صدحت

    ورقٌ تغني على غصنٍ وأفنانِ

    May God perpetuate him, and the generations, as long as

    A leaf rustles singing on a branch and twigs

  44. وضاءً بدر معاليهم ولا برحوا

    يرعاهمُ جفن سعدٍ غير وسنانِ

    Shining like the full moon of their glory, may they never

    Cease to be shaded by the eyelid of happy fortune

  45. ولا يزال مدى الأيام مجدهمُ

    بوافر العزلا يرمى بنقصانِ

    And may their glory never cease to be pelted

    With abundant honour without any decrease
