1. لاق المدامة بالمسرة لاقي

    واقرن مع الصهبا رضاب الساقي

    The tavern keeper said to the happy one, “Let us meet and drink what the cupbearer pours.”

    The dawn is pleasant so let us start the morning, and give me a drink. She is the sister of the beloved, whose lips are thieves.

  2. طاب الصبوح فعم صباحاً واسقني

    اخت الحبيب وثغره السراق

    A red one who heals the heart of every love-struck one. Not with his flowing tears is there healing.

    Rise and bring her, and leave the treacherous times. A sun revolving with her at the water-wheels’ cycle.

  3. حمراءُ تشفي قلب كل متيمٍ

    ليس الشفاءُ بدمعه المهراق

    And string on the goblets a necklace of her lips. At dawn take my mind as her dowry.

    She came and brought about joys in abundance. With her flavor and breath.

  4. قم هاتها ودع الزمان وغدرهُ

    شمساً تطوف بها بدور سواقي

    One who revealed a leg established my resurrection. The resurrection is the day legs are revealed.

  5. واعقد على الكاسات عقد حبابها

    صبحاً وخذ عقلي لها بصداقِ

    Iraq sang, so the morning breeze shook its branches. And I yearned toward every Iraq.

    Sprinklings that forbid the sleep of a love-struck youth. How can the blood of lovers be lawful for him?

  6. قدمت فأحدثت السرور موارداً

    بمذاقها طوراً وباستنشاقِ

    I ransom her if she shook her hips and rang her anklets. From the slander of a malicious backbiter.

    She toyed with me last night with the roses of her cheek. When she saw it overflowing from my cup.

  7. من كشف ساق قد أقام قيامتي

    إن القيامة يوم كشف الساقِ

    She reveals a pearl so I weep like it. By God the glances’ flowing from a thief!

    I yearned for her while she resided in my entrails. And I refused, from her, the agony of longing.

  8. فتن القلوب وقد تمنطق خصرهُ

    من أعين العشاق أيَّ نطاقِ

    O you who plunders the innards is there any mercy? Or ceaseless love or pity for me?

    Is it a mole on your cheek or blackened hearts fearing fires?

  9. غنّى العراق فهز عطفيه الصبا

    فغدوت اصبو نحو كل عراقِ

    I once had a liver that stood from passion. So I gifted it to her the day we met.

    And I kept a heart I had prepared. For misfortunes but it was lost the day we parted.

  10. رشاء يحرّم نوم صبٍّ مغرمٍ

    أنّى يحلُّ له دم العشاقِ

    O you, by love intercede regarding ardors. Is there a sprinkling from your dewy lips?

  11. أفديه أن هزّ القوام وإن رنا

    بلحاظه من طاعنٍ رشّاق

    An ink that when it shakes the pen arrogantly. Stains every polished smooth pen.

  12. أمسى يداعبني بورد خدوده

    لما رأه يفيض من أماقي

    If clouds came challenging him to a contest. They would retreat in shame headless.

    His excellent innovations arranged virtues. The peak of eloquence in cycles.

  13. يفترّ عن درٍ فأبكي مثله

    للَه درُّ الطرف من سرّاق

    From every shining forehead its virtues. Tightened its rhymes most strongly.

    He combined eloquence and rhetoric. As integrity is combined with good morals.

  14. اشتاقه وهو المقيم بمهجتي

    وأبيت منه بلوعة المشتاق

    It is as if the delicate meaning and its composition. Came paired by covenant.

    When meanings secretly stole blossoms. Words submitted to them in theft.

  15. يا ناهب الأحشاء هل من رحمةٍ

    لا سير أبدي الحب أم اشفاقِ

    A master for him is sublime literature and its superiority. Reached the heights continually ascending.

    A favor by which the curved and flat leveled. A justice the dishonest came with equivalency.

  16. خالٌ بخدك أم إليه قد التجت

    سوداءُ قلبي خشية الأحراقِ

    Glory at its extent became old for him. And the path of glory belongs to him in entitlement.

    O noble one who obtained praise. By his widely known superiority.

  17. قد كان لي كبدٌ تقوم على الهوى

    فوهبتها للوصل يوم تلاقي

    You are congratulated for what you attained an elevation. And for it congratulations to an outstanding noble!

    Fate was generous matching wisdom most high. Though they had been of different congruity.

  18. وحفظت قلباً كنت قد أعددته

    للنائبات فضاع يوم فراقِ

    So submit to it in the shade of a most generous glory. For life all the highly esteemed vie.

    The son of loftiness, pride, he is its ally. And master of its generous deeds absolutely.

  19. يا هذه والحب يشفع في الحشا

    هل رشفةٌ من ثغرك الدرياق

    The most faithful, even minister judicious. He did not fear injustice or confrontation.

    His generous hands gave like. The slim and quivering thighs gave.

  20. درٌّ بجيدك أم حباك قلائداً

    من شعره العمريُّ عبد الباقي

    A rain you own palms, and in turmoil. A lion owning the towering necks.

    Wisdom, right opinion, and good qualities. Explicitly without interrogation.

  21. الشاعر الفرد الذي أهدى لنا

    درر البحور نظمن في الأوراقِ

    O excellent abode of peace, its justice. And beauty have spent the night in embrace.

    Its shelters prospered with the most truthful justice. For luck and good its trusted equivalent.

  22. حبرٌ إذا هزّ اليراع مفاخراً

    أذرى بكل مهندٍ رقراقِ

    A moon in its crescent appointed Mercury. So they conformed in glory what conformation!

    May it last for him, most gentle. For his most high right hand without grasping.

  23. لو إنّ سحباناً أتاهُ مبارياً

    لارتدّ من خجلٍ أخا أطراق

    However much I exaggerate in praising him. I do not reach the lowest bound of exaggeration.

    And to you, O full moon of praise, I came. With the elegance of a poem from a love-struck youth.

  24. حلّت كرايمه البديع نظامها

    جيد البلاغة في كالأطواقِ

    A hearing love appeared and ears fell in love. Before eyes fell in love.

    It is a fruit that came to a lap though. It mimics the pearl in brilliance.

  25. من كل مشرقة الجبين عروفها

    شدّت قوافيها أشد وثاقِ

    It bestows praise and felicitations. Excellent bestowal and you are excellent company.

  26. جمع الفصاحة بالبلاغة مثلما

    قرن الحجى بمحاسن الأخلاق

  27. فكأنما المعنى الرقيق ونظمه

    جاء اقترانهما على ميثاقِ

  28. لما استرقّ الزاهرات معانياً

    خضعت له الألفاظ باسترقاقِ

  29. مولىً له الأدب الرفيع وفضله

    بلغ المعالي راقياً متراقي

  30. فضلٌ به الحدبا استوت والمجدبل

    عدلٌ أتى الزوراء بالأرفاقِ

  31. أضحى له المجد التليد بحدّه

    وله طريق المجد باستحقاقِ

  32. يا أيها الشهم الذي نال الثناءَ م

    بفضله المشهور في الآفاقِ

  33. هنئتَ فيما نلته من رتبةٍ

    ولها الهناءُ بفاضلٍ غيداقِ

  34. جاد الزمان فطابق الحزم العلى

    فيها وقد كانا بغيرٍ طباق

  35. فاسلم لها في ظل أكرم ماجدٍ

    للعمر كل ذوي العلى سبّاقِ

  36. ابن المعالي الغر وهو نجيبها

    وأبو مكارمها على الإطلاقِ

  37. أوفى همامٍ بل وزيرٍ حازمٍ

    لم يخشَ من ضيمٍ ومن املاق

  38. جادت أياديه المواهب مثلما

    جادت بهز قواضبٍ ورشاق

  39. غيث تملكه الأكف وفي الوغى

    ليث تملك شامخ الأعناقِ

  40. بالحلم والرأي السديد صفاته

    الغراء ناطقةٌ بلا استنطاقِ

  41. يا حبذا دار السلام فعدله

    وجمالها باتا بحسن عناقِ

  42. سعدت مرابعها بأصدق عادلٍ

    للسعد والخير الوفي مصداقِ

  43. قمر بهالته أقام عطارداً

    فتوافقا بالمجد أيّ وفاقِ

  44. دامت له العلياء وهي رقيقة

    ليمينه العليا بغير آباقِ

  45. مهما أتيتُ مغالياً بمديحه

    لم آت بالأدنى من الأغراقِ

  46. وإليك يا بدر المحامد أقبلت

    غراءُ نظمٍ من فتى الأشواقِ

  47. حبٌّ سماعيٌّ بدا وتعشقُ

    الآذان قبل تعشق الأحداقِ

  48. هي ثمرةٌ جاءت إلى حجرٍ وإن

    كانت تحاكي الدر بالإشراقِ

  49. تهدي المقام مدائحاً وتهانياً

    نعم المقام وأنت نعم الراقي

  50. هيها القبول فلا برحت مويداً

    وموفقاً بمواهب الخلاقِ
