1. هو الحب في العشاق ينفذ ما يقضي

    فلا تعذلوا صباً به كأدان يقضي

    Love in lovers fulfills what it decrees

    So do not blame a youth seized by love's decrees

  2. ولا تنكروا أهل الهوى ونحولهم

    فإن الهوى العذري يأذن بالخضِ

    And do not deny the rights of lovers

    For platonic love permits what it sees

  3. إذا فتكت فينا العيون فواتراً

    أتتها القدود الهيف بالحث والحضِ

    When eyes allure us with their glances

    Passion rushes in heatedly

  4. وما الحب إلا لذةً ثم لوعةً

    فاونةً يرنو واونةً يغضي

    Love is but joy and then affliction

    Now softly moaning, now harshly seething

  5. أيا بارقاً من جابن الحي وامضاً

    يذكرني ثغر الأحبة بالومضِ

    O fleeting light in the living's night, vanish

    Reminding me of my beloved's radiant teeth

  6. ترى من ثغور الغيد جئت مبلغاً

    فؤاد أخي الأشواق رمضاً على رمضِ

    You see I come from my love's gardens

    To a heart longing, burnt with ardent heat

  7. وهل علمت براقة الثغر أنني

    أسير النوى والصبر ليس بمنقضِ

    Though I know my love's lips are perfect

    I am bound by my vow and unbroken will

  8. تذكرت من مسراك ماضي عهودنا

    ولا بد للمشتاق من ذكر ما يمضي

    I remember our past bonds and days together

    The longing lover cannot forget what is past

  9. بروحي من تهدي السلام إشارةً

    وتنظر من خوف العواذل عن عُرض

    I send you my soul covertly signalling

    Watching fearfully for slander and disrepute

  10. ظبية حسنٍ كحل السحر طرفها

    فيفتك يقظاناً ويهتك بالغمض

    A beautiful, seducing gazelle whose eyeliner is magic

    Bewitching the awake and enchanting the sleeping

  11. مهفهفةٌ بيضاء معسولة اللمى

    مورّدة الخدين طيبة العرض

    A white, luscious idol with rosy cheeks

    Of good character and graceful bearing

  12. تغار إذا ماست دلالاً أو انثنت

    غصون النقا من غصن قامتها الغض

    She is jealous when caressed or when the branches

    Of the delicate narcissus touch her supple frame

  13. ومن ذلك الفرع الأثيث بنفسجٌ

    حكى خد معشوقٍ تأثر بالعض

    From that blooming branch springs a violet

    Whose cheek recalls a beloved's imprinted kiss

  14. أباحت لنا الصهبا بمرجان ثغرها

    وأهدت لنا التقبيل من جيدها الفضي

    She allowed us to kiss her rosy lips

    And gifted us that privilege from her silvery cheek

  15. وجادت بوردٍ فوق نسرين وجنةٍ

    فيا خير محمرٍ بأحسن مبيض

    She bestowed a rose above narcissus and garden

    O finest wine-red blend with the finest white

  16. أعاذل دعني من ملام كأنهُ

    فراق حبيبٍ صد هجراً على بغض

    Chide me not, o critic, as though I betrayed

    A lover who turned away in disdain and dislike

  17. رعى اللَه أياماً مضين مع الصفا

    وعصراً قضيناه مع الأهيف البض

    May God protect the days we spent in purity

    And the times shared with the pure and devout

  18. كأن الزمان الغمر أصبح حاسداً

    فاخلفنا عهداً وعامل بالنقض

    It seems time has become resentfully envious

    Breaking its promise and covenant

  19. فتبّا له لحانةً غير معربٍ

    فيخفض ذا رفعٍ ويرفع ذا خفض

    Curse its wavering nature

    Lowering the high and raising the low

  20. أمالك قلبي والجمال محكمٌ

    لك الأمر فافعل ما تشابه واقض

    You own my heart, and perfect is your beauty

    Command as you wish, fulfill and dispose

  21. وحق الهوى إني على الحب ثابتٌ

    وشمل غرامي فيك ليس بمرفض

    By love's right, my love for you is steadfast

    My passion's scope for you will never diminish

  22. ولم يثنني عن سنة الحب والهوى

    سوى مدح داود وذلكم فرضي

    Nothing deters me from love's ways and desires

    Except David's psalms which are my obligation

  23. وزيرٌ إذا ما سار في حلبة العلى

    على مهلٍ يأتي أمام ذوي الركض

    A minister, when he enters the arena of glory

    Proceeds slowly but outpaces the swiftest

  24. هو البدر للمجد الرفيع وللندا

    وللعلم والعليا هو الحكم المرضى

    He is the full moon of sublime glory and aid

    Of knowledge, nobility and wise judgment

  25. وذو الحزم والراي السديد مؤيدٌ

    بكل صوابٍ ما يقول وما يمضي

    Firm, resolute, aided in all rightness

    In what he says and executes

  26. مهيبٌ حليمٌ جهبذٌ متجلببٌ

    من العلم والآداب بالشرف المحض

    Awe-inspiring, forbearing, bold and excellent

    Through knowledge and fine manners purely manifest

  27. وقد الفت يمناه حليماً مسالماً

    وعاهدها ألا تطيع على القبض

    He pledged to wisdom to be peaceful and gentle

    And not to obey calls for force and unrest

  28. على السلم تلقاه حليماً مسالماً

    وإن دارت الهيجاءُ كالليث ينقض

    You will find him gentle and peaceful, not provoked

    Even if chaos surges like a tearing lion

  29. إذا قيل للأعداء سلّ حسامهُ

    وإن كان قولاً يدبرون على وفض

    If enemies are told to lower their swords

    They will comply though it is hard to digest

  30. إلى مجده تهدي المعال يجمالها

    وأسرارها القصوى إلى علمه تقضي

    Glories guide the fortunate who discern his qualities

    How wondrous, a moon walking the earth

  31. بروضتهِ الغنا العلوم تفننت

    وأفنانها تلتف بعضاً على بعض

    Should time move to shake off its links to him

    Eulogies about him will never diminish

  32. وفي صدره بحر العلوم وكفه

    سحاب نوالٍ فاض بالكرم النض

    By your life, time creates no lasting havoc

    For the excellence he possesses is matchless

  33. وقد وفدت نجب المحامد والثنا

    عليه على طول البسيطة والعرض

    Days will make excuses and seek union with him

    At his lofty pinnacle ceaselessly lit

  34. ببذل الندى والفضل أرضى وليهُ

    وقد قهر الأعداء بالطعن والفرض

    My lord, though far, I pay you this poor tribute

    Of words and verse - it is not equal to your stature

  35. تقول المعالي إذ تضيءُ صفاتهُ

    فواعجباً بدرٌ يسير على الأرض

    With thoughts seeking pardon and acceptance

    Though far from matching your eulogies

  36. فإن رامت الأيام عنه انفضاضها

    فركب الثنا عن بابه غير منفض

    To your refined mind and manners

    It is but rust to your polished essence

  37. لعمرك ما الدهر الخؤون بغائرٍ

    هماماً له فضلٌ يطول على ألابض

    Take it, and spare my stuttering attempts

    To gain some joy and contentment from life

  38. ستبدي لهُ الأيام عذراً وتلتجي

    لذروته العلياء دائمة ألاضِّ

  39. أمولاي وافاك البعيد بمدحةٍ

    وفي الحال ما يغني عن القول والعرض

  40. بنيّة فكرٍ ترتجي العفو والرضى

    وإن تك جاءت من مديحك بالبُرض

  41. وما هي إلا عند مرصوص فضلكم

    وسامي ذررى آدابكم شبه النقض

  42. فخذها ودم ما غرّدت ورق أيكةٍ

    تنال من ألأيام والعيش ما يرضي
