يا من له روض الفؤاد مكان

وهواه في قلب الشجي فتان

O you who has the garden of my heart a dwelling

And whose love in the heart of the passionate is alluring

يهديك وجد الصب اشواقا كما

تهدي لنا من بعدك الأشجان

Passion's ardour sends you greetings

As the bushes send us greetings after you

يا وحشتي مذغاب انس جمالكم

والانس في مصربكم ريعان

O my longing since your beauty disappeared

And companionship in your dwelling flourished

ما راعني الا الفراق ولم يكن

لي منكم يوم الفراق عيان

I was not preoccupied except by separation

And on the day we parted I did not see you

لا تحسبوا ترك التودع عن قلى

كلا فما لي عنكم سلوان

Do not reckon my not saying farewell

To be due to boredom, no, but

لكن لفرط مودتي لم تستطع

يوم الفراق تراكم الأجفان

Due to my intense affection I could not

On the day we parted, my eyelids

ان تحسبوه على المحب جناية

فالعفوان العفو منك امان

For you to consider it a crime against a lover

Is forgiveness, and your forgiveness is safety

تاللَه مذ غبتم وشط مزاركم

اني لورد لقاكم ظمآن

By God, since you left and the place of your visit vanished

I am like a wilted flower yearning to see you

فطويل دهر مثل يوم معكم

وقصير يوم عنكم ازمان

So my separation seems long like a day with you

And a day without you eras long

ان تنعموا ردوا الرقاد لعل ان

يحظى بطيف ناظر وسنان

If you are enjoying yourselves, return to sleep so that

A watcher's eye and tooth may find happiness in a phantom of you

فسقى اويقات السرور ومهدها

دمع المشوق الوافر الهتان

The times of joy have quenched its thirst and prepared it

With the tears of an enamoured, fervent, passionate lover

اني المقيم على العهود ان تطل

بعد فعهدك بالضمير يصان

I who keeps promises, if your covenant rises

Afterwards, it is preserved in conscience

ان تسألوا عن حال صب مغرم

فالنوم ليس تذوقه العينان

If you ask about the state of a lovesick youth

Sleep does not taste it, nor do the eyes

ولقد عراني منكم يوم النوى

أشواق قلب بعضها النيران

And the day of farewell has stripped me

Of passions of a heart, some of which are fires

فصبابتي تهدي اليك مع الصبا

أرواح شوق عرفها الريحان

So my fervent love sends you with the morning breeze

Spirits of longing, known to the sweet basil

يا آل ودي هل يفوز بطيفكم

صب قلوقٌ طرفه يقظان

O people of my affection! Can a fervent

Lover win your phantom, his eyelid awake?

قد كاد يعلن بالغرام لبعدكم

قلب صبور شانه الكتمان

A patient heart, whose quality is concealment, almost

Revealed its passion in your absence

فمتى يراك الطرف شرفت الحمى

وتسرفيك الآل والأوطان

When will an eye see the honor that fever brought

And your dwelling by family and homelands made joyful?

يا حبذا مصر السعيدة قد دنا

ومن روض مغناها البهي عثمان

How excellent is blessed Egypt, for it has come near

And from its beautiful meadows Osman

إنسان عشق للعلوم ونيلها

ولعين مقلة انسنا انسان

A human being passionate for knowledge and obtaining it

And the beloved of a soft eye, we forgot man

صبّ لآداب تعشق قلبه

ويلوح من آدابه البرهان

A fervent lover, his heart loves

Literature, and its proof appears from his literature

أضحى لتحصيل العلوم مهاجرا

ولذيذ وصل العاشق الهجران

He traveled to obtain knowledge

And separation is sweet for the lover exile

قد كان لي منه حديث مطرب

يحكي السلاف وكاسه الآذان

He had with me a delightful talk

That related history, his ears like cups

والآن وردي ذكره وثناؤه

والورد لي ما تذرف الأجفان

And now his mention and praise have come to me

And branches are what my eyelids shed

فغرامه ابدا سميري كلما

هبت صبا وحديثه الألحان

So my fervent love for him, whenever

The morning breeze blows and chats its melodies

يا أيها الخل الوفي بعهده

عطفا علي فإنني ولهان

O you loyal to your covenant

Show kindness to me, for I am lovesick

فعليك مني لطف كل تحية

وسلام عهد حفظه ايمان

So every greeting and peace of a covenant preserved by faith

Is due to you from me

ويخص منا بالسلام حبيبنا

الألمعي أبو العلا عثمان

And our beloved conveys special greetings

To our shining Ahmad Abu Al-'Ala Osman

فليوهبنكما العلوم وحفظها

وليفتحن عليكما المنان

So may He grant you both knowledge and memorizing it

And open for you the gifts

وليرجعنكما الينا بالمنى

في كل فضل دونه الأقران

And return you to us with wishes

In every virtue unmatched by peers

أرجوكم خير الدعا بمعالم

قرنت بها البركات والأذعان

I beseech you, the best prayer, with features

That blessings and submissions were linked to

والعيسوي ابن الكرامة ناظم

عقد الثنا في الحب ليس يشان

And Al-'Isawi son of nobility, composer

Of the necklace of praise in love unparalleled

ويقبل الراحات وهو حسبيكم

والعفو عن تقصيره احسان

Who kisses hands, and that suffices you

And forgiveness of his shortcoming is kindness
