أسناء برق لاح أم

ثغر الحبيب لنا ابتسم

The lightning of smiles shone from the beloved's mouth

Or was it the light of his cheek that beamed

أم نور محياه الذي

بجماله البدر استتم

Or those verses on his forehead

That dawn had inscribed

أم تلك آيات الجبين

فخلتها صبحاً هجم

You have tortured me, O branch of basil

My aching heart, O friend of pain

عذبت يا غصن النقا

قلب المحب أخي الألم

And warded me off though I had not

Committed a sin against you or transgressed

وصددت عنه وما جنى

ذنباً لديك وما اجترم

And you made me sick just as

You reserved your gaze for sickness

وكسوتني سقماً كما

خصصت طرفك بالسقم

So I concealed my love in shyness

And tears betrayed what I concealed

فكتمت حبك بالحشا

والدمع باح بما اكتتم

I know not what I experienced from you

Fondness or aloofness

لم أدر ما لاقيتهُ

منكم دلالا أمم شمم

For the beautiful, when ruled by beauty

Is not unjust

إن الجميل إذا تحكم بالجما

ل فما ظلم

You forgot what love had done

When we were intimate

أنسيت ما فعل الغرام

ونحن عند الملتثم

Where the beloved embraces me

And clings to me

حيث الحبيب معانقي

وملازمي بالملتزم

And I sipped from the cup of wine

Giving it a mouth to mouth

ورشفت كاس مدامة

عاطيتها فماً بفم

Squeezing from his cheek

Lips fastened with a kiss

عصرت لنا من خده

وبثغره الحبب انتظم

And I swear by your eyes I have not forgotten

Moments of intimacy that have passed with a kiss

وأبيك لم انس لويلاتٍ

مضت لثماً وضم

By the temple, the cheek I swear and the whiteness of his teeth

I have no sin except that

بالمحجرين وباللمى

بالخد أقسم والعنم

I likened him to a gazelle

He showed rejection and said in

لا ذنب إلّا إنني

شبهته ظبي النعم

The simile you have slipped

O ignorant one, know the value of passion

أبدى الصدود وقال في

التشبيه زل بك القدم

You are merely an accuser

You compared me to a gazelle

يا جاهلا قدر الهوى

ما أنت إلّا متهم

And the gazelle is fed bitter berries

And you made my neck dark

بالظبي قد شبهتني

والظبي مرباه الاكم

While cardamom is its pasture

Who will defend me from the rejection

وجعل قدي اسمراً

واللدن منبته الأجم

Of the aloof one and his certainty?

Relate to the keen observer As'ad

من منصفي من أهيف

جر الصدود وما جزم

Abu Al-Himam, meaning Ibn As'ad

The one who attained the heights and by them prevailed

تحكي لواحظه سيو

ف الأسعدي أبي الهمم

The rays of his virtue appeared as blessings upon a banner

It is as if he were a moon shedding light

أعني ابن أسعد الذي

حاز العلى وبها احتكم

Through the darkness of generosity

Woe to his enemy when

وبدت أشعة فضله

نعماً تلوح على علم

The Yemeni unsheathed and stormed

Or when he shook his dark spear

فكأنه قمر يلو

ح لناظر بسما الكرم

The sons of Ma'addi or Ghassan fled

If you smelled the day of his battles

يا راحتيه بحقه

رفقا لقد عجز القلم

You would forget the drawing of swords

This exalted As'ad

لا البحر يحكي جوده

يا صاحبي ولا الديم

Imposing yet humble

He never said no when asked

لم تلق سمحا مثله

في القادمين ولا القدم

Except yes

Noble scion of glory from

غزلي بعذب حديثه

لا في العذيب وذي سلم

A father, brother and uncle

They were stars and when he came

يولي الطعان بحربه

وبرحبه يولي النعم

He was the full moon in the darkness of night

The exalted sang his praises

ليث إذا حمي الوطيس

بنقع حرب واضطرم

Since he was weaned from suckling

And the fates in his garden twittered

تزكو له ريح الجلا

د كأنها عرف الخزم

A lofty melody

His smile blossomed and returned

ويلٌ لا عداه إذا

سل اليماني واقتحم

To life from nothingness

God reward a family

أو هز لدنا اسمراً

خلت ابن معدي او غثم

Through whom glory prevailed over nations

Seed of glory in which there is no

لو شمت يوم حروبه

لنسيت تحلاق اللمم

Doubt or blemish

They are the family of Mar'ab except what

هذا العلي الاسعدي

المرعبي المحتشم

Ancestors and generous nobles decreed

They dispelled darkness with the flashes of

ما قال لا عند استما

ح نواله إلّا نعم

Their swords that cleaved skulls

They are warriors whose clamor

شهم سليل المجد عن

أبٍّ وعن أخٍّ وعمم

Cuts to the core of the deaf

It is as if, when war grew fraught

كانوا النجوم وذا أتى

كالبدر في داجي الظلم

And the throngs mingled in combat

They were lions upon steeds

زفّت لدى إسعاده

العلياء مذ بلغ الفطم

Fierce with blood

O Lord, whose citadel

وبروضه هزج القر

يض مغردا سامي النغم

Is inviolable sanctuary

Dictate eulogies praising the beautiful

وافتر مبسمه وعاد

إلى الحيوة من العدم

Smile of an upturned mouth

Thirstily coming to draw

للَه درّ عصابة

بعليهم سادوا الأمم

From your palm's pouring Nile

Submit yourself and always

جرثومة المجد الذي

لا ريب فيه ولا وصم

Recite this Christian's eulogy

Son of nobility, a plant nourished by your bounty

هم آل مرعب إلا ما

جد والكرام ذوو الحكم

Known by this banner

Never ceasing to bestow gifts

كشفوا الدجا بوميض بر

ق سنا الظباء وبالأصم

With generosity on those who come and go

Where by nature bounty flows

قوم صليل ظعانهم

يبري الصميم من الصمم

Previously and in you culminates

فكأنهم عند القتال

إذا تشاجر واقتحم

أسد على خيل كعقبا

ن محجلة بدم

يا أيها المولى الذي

برج العلاء له حرم

وافتك لمياء المديح

بحسن ثغر مبتسم

ظمياء جاءت تستقي

من نيل كف فاض يم

فاسلم ودم فالعيسويّ

عقود مدحك قد نظم

ابن الكرامة غرس نعمت

ك الشهير بذا العلم

لا زل تمنح منعماً

بالجود من وافى وأم

حيث النوال بحاتم

قبلا بدا وبك اختتم
