1. لهفي على فتاكةٍ غدرت بها

    أيدي المنية والحمام سقاها

    I yearn for the beauty betrayed

    By the hands of death that gave her drink.

  2. فهي التي كانت إذا ما أُرسلت

    في معركٍ تفني صفوف عداها

    She who when unleashed

    Would decimate the ranks of her foes.

  3. أسفاً على تلك البزاة وحسنها

    وعلى جراءتها الوفية أها

    I grieve her valor and grace,

    Her steadfast loyalty I lament.

  4. كالريح في هباتها والليث في

    نهضاتها والبرق في مسراها

    Like the wind in its gusts, a lion

    In its pounces, lightning in its flash.

  5. سهم القضا منسارها سمر القنا

    أظفارها بيض الظبا جنحاها

    The arrow of fate bloodied her beak,

    Her talons white as an antelope's flank, her wings.

  6. نورُ الصباح بصدرها إذ حلّيت

    لون السماءِ وذُهّبت عيناها

    The light of dawn adorned her chest when

    She took on the sky's hue, her eyes gilded.

  7. غراءُ قد كانت إذا صالت ضحى

    سهم المنون يهاب أن يلقاها

    A mare she was, when she charged at dawn

    The arrow of death feared to meet her.

  8. سل موكب الحجلات إذ سلت على

    ركبانها سيف القضا كفاها

    Ask the procession of horses when she charged them,

    The sword of fate restrained her.

  9. قسماً وحق يمين ذي الفتك الذي

    هو مطلع المجد السني مولاها

    By the oath and the right hand of the deadly one

    Whose glory dawned, his master adored.

  10. عني البشير الجنبلاطي المرتضى

    ذا المكرمات وفيض سحب نداها

    The visionary Jumblatt desired

    With his noble acts and abundant rain of generosity.

  11. مالي سلوٌّ عن رثا قاقونةٍ

    إلا بزرقا أصبحت تتباهى

    Why should I not mourn for Qaqoona

    Except with pride has Zarqa now become.

  12. حسناءُ كف البدر يرقم صدرها

    في آية الحسن البهي وضحاها

    A beauty with the moon's palm patterns her chest

    In signs of radiant beauty and light.

  13. فكأن ليل الصيف قبل صباحهِ

    من أزرق الجو البهيج كساها

    As if the summer night before its dawn

    Robed her in the sky's lucid azure.

  14. أن حركت فوق الكنادر مخلباً

    تتناذر العقبان بل تخشاها

    If she stirred above the stars a claw

    She'd make the ravens scatter, even fear her.

  15. فيها سلوت جمال من هلكت وقد

    أضحت غداة أتى الحمام فداها

    In her is solace for the beauty that perished when

    The turtledoves came and for her, sacrificed.
