قلت للنحوي الذي فاق الظبا
وحكى الورد بخد وعرار
I said to the grammarian who excelled the gazelle
And narrated the rose with a cheek and a temple:
أيها الأخذ قلبي مغنما
بلحاظٍ فاتناتٍ ونفار
“O you who have taken my heart as booty
With a charming, coquettish glance and aversion -
قف ولا تنفر إذا أبصرتني
واقفاً وقفة ذلٍّ وانكسار
Stop and do not shy away when you see me
Standing with the stance of humiliation and despair -
واجرد الفرع على عين جرت
إن حرف العين واللَه لجار
And let the branch flow over the eye that shed tears
If the letter ‘ain and Allah's name harm.”
