1. ما للمعالي تفيض الدمع مدرارا

    والمجد يندب آمالاً وأوطارا

    Why does grief profusely flow in streams

    And glory mourns hopes and abodes?

  2. وعاطفات الأماني بتن في حزنٍ

    وواردات التهاني عدن اكدارا

    The emotions of wishes weep in sorrow

    And the news of joy turns into sadness

  3. وآمل البذل قد أمسى بلا أملٍ

    وخائف الدهر لم يستجد أنصارا

    The hope of giving has become hopeless

    And the fear of fate found no supporters

  4. هل البشير الشهابي قد قضى أجلاً

    فأظلمت بعده العلياء أقمارا

    Did Al-Shihabi pass away after his time?

    So the luminaries darkened after him

  5. نعم قد انقضّ ذاك البدر وارتشفت

    أم المعالي مصاباً جلّ كبّارا

    Yes, that full moon has set and

    The mother of glory sipped misfortune - great misfortune

  6. ويلمّها كلمةً ويلم قائلها

    يا ليتها كذبٌ أو كان مهذارا

    It scolds her with words and scolds their speaker

    If only it was a lie or delirium

  7. أصمت قلوباً وأبكت كل ناظرةٍ

    وأسعرت بلهيب الحزن أفكارا

    It silenced hearts and made every onlooker cry

    And ignited the flames of sorrow in thoughts

  8. مالي وللدهر كم غالت غوائلهُ

    وكم دعتني إلى الأحزان أمرارا

    What is it to me and fate - how strange are its tribulations!

    And how often it led me to bitter sorrows

  9. يا للمنية أنّي قد غدرت بمن

    وفاءُ صمصامه لم يبقِ غدارا

    Oh death, how you betrayed the one

    Whose faithfulness did not remain a traitor

  10. وكيف انشبتِ أظفاراً بمعترك

    قد كان ينشب في الآساد أظفارا

    How did you extend your claws into an arena

    That used to extend claws against lions?

  11. يا لوعتي كيف أضحى اللحد منزلهُ

    وكان لا يرتضي متن السهى دارا

    Oh my agony - how did the grave become his dwelling

    When he never accepted the belly of rabbits as a home?

  12. وكيف ضمّ عباباً زاخراً كرماً

    وكوكباً في سماء المجد سيّارا

    And how did it confine a generous and bountiful planet

    A star roaming the sky of glory?

  13. تبكي الصفاة عليه والكماة إذا

    همى السحاب وهزّ الشهمُ خطارا

    The elite cry over him, and the distinguished

    When clouds threaten and lightning flashes

  14. والمشرفيات في الهيجاء تندبهُ

    والأعوجيات تبكي منه كرارا

    The spouses cry for him in passionate laments

    And the crooked ones bitterly weep over him

  15. تبكي الأيامى على فياض رأفتهِ

    بكا اليتامى ندا كفيه أسحارا

    The orphans cry over the overflowing of his kindness

    The outstretched hands of the orphans called him a sorcerer

  16. والجد أصبح لما غاب كوكبه

    يبكي بلبنان أطلالاً وآثارا

    In his absence, the old man weeps over Lebanon

    Crying over ruins and relics

  17. أبكى الشهاب الذي كانت أشعتهُ

    تضيءُ في فلك العلياء أنوارا

    I weep over the meteor whose rays

    Lit the planets of the elite with lights

  18. وجهبذاً ماجداً طابت خلائقهُ

    فالعرب والعجم تروي عند أخبارا

    A glorious, refined man whose manners

    Arabs and non-Arabs narrate

  19. كم سنّ للعدل فعالاً يؤيدهُ

    وسلّ يمحو ظلام الظلم بتّارا

    How much did he establish justice through his actions

    And roll up darkness of injustice like scrolls

  20. لم لا أفيض الدما من مقلتيّ كما

    فاضت أياديهِ بين الناس تيارا

    Why don't tears pour from my eyelids as

    His hands poured goodness among people like rivers?

  21. وكيف لا املاءُ الأقطار من حزني

    على الذي ملأت نعماهُ أقطارا

    And how can the regions not fill with my sorrow

    Over one whose favors filled the horizons?

  22. كيف اصطباري وسلواني مآثره

    كالجور في عصره قد بات فرارا

    How can I have patience and solace while his achievements

    Have become like fleeing from injustice in his time?

  23. وكيف ينسى وهذه الزهر ساطعةٌ

    جاءت بأخلاقه الغراء تذكارا

    And how can one forget when these flowers shine

    Brought as mementos of his sublime morals?

  24. لا أكتفي بالبكا حولاً كمعتذر

    لكن سأبكيهِ أحوالاً واعصارا

    I cannot suffice with crying around as an apology

    Rather, I will cry over his states and tribulations

  25. لا زال دمعي يسقي الأرض منسكباً

    أو يُنبت الأمغر الصوان أزهارا

    Still my tears water the earth pouring down

    Or make the meadows bloom with flowers

  26. يا لهف نفسي إذا ما النائبات عرت

    ولا بشير يروعهنّ انذارا

    Oh how my soul yearns when disasters strike

    With no Shihab to frighten them with warnings

  27. من كان في السلم للأصحاب منعطفاً

    وللعداة غداة الحرب قهارا

    Who was a refuge for companions in peace

    And a conqueror of enemies at the break of war?

  28. من كان لا يرتضي الا التقى عملاً

    ولم يرم غير نصر الحق ايثارا

    Who did not accept but piety as deed

    And only preferred victory for truth?

  29. من كان لا تطرق البأساءُ صاحبه

    ولا تمسّ لهُ أيدي الأسى جارا

    Who did the calamities not touch his companion

    And the hands of woe did not treat him as a neighbor?

  30. من أخصب العدل في أيامه وزهت

    رياضه فاجتناها الناس أثمارا

    Who made justice fertile during his days that its

    Gardens produced fruits people picked?

  31. من كان كالغيث يدعو كل يابسةٍ

    بوابل الجود خضرا أينما زارا

    Who was like rain calling every barren land

    With clouds of generosity to turn green wherever he visited?

  32. من كان كالليث حاشا لا أشبههُ

    بالليث خشية أن ينحط مقدارا

    Who was like a lion - I dare not compare him

    To a lion for fear of belittling his merit

  33. بل فاتكاً لا يهز الخطب جانبهُ

    قد عالج الدهر أحلاء وامرارا

    Rather, a stalwart whom tribulations did not shake

    He confronted fate - the sweet and the bitter

  34. كم سامه الدهر خسفاً فاستجاد لهُ

    صبراً وخاصمهُ فازداد إظهارا

    How often fate insulted him so he showed

    Patience and opposed it - increasingly manifest

  35. يا صاحبي أسعداني وارثياه معي

    واطلعا من مراثي النظم ابكارا

    My friend, make me happy and sympathize with me

    Step out and pick the ripe fruits of elegy

  36. حال الجريض وقد جف القريض فلا

    عتبٌ إذا لم طل في ذاك اشعارا

    The condition of the stricken when the wound dries

    No blame if poetry there did not flow long

  37. حبرتها بدموعٍ مزجهنّ دمٌ

    والحزن اضرم في القلب الشجي نارا

    I penned it with tears mixed with blood

    And sorrow ignited a raging fire in the aching heart

  38. يا نفس مهلا فذا حكم الإله فلا

    يبقي عبيداً ولا يجتاز أحرارا

    Oh soul, wait - this is the Judgement of God

    He does not keep servants or spare freemen

  39. ولا يراعي اخا مجدٍ وذا شرفٍ

    وليس تمتع دارق منه ديارا

    He does not heed a brother of glory and honor

    And no residents of palaces lasted eternally

  40. دارت على قيصر أيدي المنون كما

    دارت بكسرى وقد أخنت على دارا

    The hands of death turned against Caesar

    As it turned against Khosrow and ruined his abode

  41. إن غاب عن هذه الدنيا فإنّ لهُ

    ذكراً يدوم مع الأيام معطارا

    If he left this world, his memory remains

    Enduring with time - fragrant

  42. قضى على ثقة من ربه فغدا

    مصاحباً في جنان الخلد أبرارا

    He met his Lord confidently so he became

    A companion in the eternal gardens with the righteous

  43. ناداه رضوان من أعلى الجنان رضى

    أقدم بشيراً فقد لاقيت غفارا

    Ridwan called him from the highest of heavens pleased

    "Come O Shihab for you have found forgiveness"

  44. ادخل بما كنت في دنياك تعملهُ

    من المبرات إعلاناً واسرارا

    "Enter with what you used to do in the world

    Of kind acts - openly and discretely"

  45. عليك من ربك الرحمان ما صدحت

    ملائك الخلد بالتسبيح تكرارا

    Upon you from your Lord the Merciful is what

    The angels of eternity loudly repeat in prayer
