أضحى النبيه أخو البراعة صامتاً

ملقى سدى وحديثهُ مهجورُ

The wise man has become brother of proficiency, silent,

Cast aside in vain, his words abandoned,

وغدا البليد أخو الجهالة ناطقاً

فيما يشا وخطاؤه مشكورُ

And the stupid has become brother of ignorance, speaking

Whatever he wishes, his mistakes applauded.

صدق المثال الدهر دولابٌ فما

بسوى الحمير أو البغال يدورُ

How true the saying, time is a wheel, so it

Turns none but donkeys or mules around.
