My heart is captive to a gazelle
The full moon of beauty has completed it
ظبي بعينيه سحرٌ
هاروت منه تعلم
A gazelle, whose eyes contain magic
Harut learned magic from him
قوامه سمهريٌ
يهتز والطرف لهذم
His figure is of reddish gold
It sways while the eyelids quiver
من منصفي أو مجيري
من عادلٍ منه أظلم
Who of my counselors or helpers
Who is just, who has wronged me?
رقيق خصرٍ ولكن
فواده ليس يرحم
Delicate of waist but
His heart shows no mercy
إذا رآني سقيماً
يقول جفني أسقم
When he sees me sick
He says, "My eyelids have weakened"
يضن باللثم تيهاً
ولا يزال ملثم
He is stingy with a fleeting kiss
Yet he remains veiled
أواه من خمر ريقٍ
أوآه درٌ منظم
Oh, the wine of his saliva
Oh, what a precious sealed wine!
يا عاذلي استريحا
من الملام إلى كم
O you who blame me, find rest
From blame, how long will it last?
اسم الذي صيرتني
ألحاظه الدعج مغرم
The name that has made me
Infatuated with his languid glances
في عينه خير داءٍ
وألفا تشبيه مبسم
In his eyes is the best malady
And a thousand analogies, smiling
ختامه كابتداءٍ
وقلبه يا محكم
His ending is like his beginning
And his heart, O resolute one
وشطره فعل أمرٍ
طرداً وعكساً تحكم
And his poem is an imperative
Repetition and opposite under your command
وبعض شطريه بحرٌ
والعكس معشوق اعلم
And some of its verses are seas
And the opposite, the beloved, I know
لا يعرفنه لساني
وعند قومي معظم
My tongue does not know him
And he is held in high esteem by my people
فيا له من مليج
رؤياه للعين مغنم
What smooth commingling he is
Seeing him is a profitable dream
أفديه من ذي جمالٍ
هواه في الناس قسم
I would ransom him, the one with beauty
His love among people is shared
أذاب قلبي دلالاً
ولست بالحب متهم
He melted my heart gently
And I am not accused of love
له على الحسن ختمٌ
والحسن فيه تختم
He has the seal of beauty
And beauty is sealed in him
