1. خودٌ من الروم في أعطافها لينٌ

    تضيءُ في ثغرها من فرقها سينُ

    She sways gently, this Roman beauty -

    Her smile shines between her parted lips.

  2. ظبيّةٌ ترتعي الأحشاء آمنةً

    وليس من طرفها الفتاك تأمينُ

    A gazelle grazing safely in the meadows,

    No predatory glance makes her insecure.

  3. ماست فبانت غصون البان من خجلٍ

    وأسفرت فتناجى الحور والعينُ

    The boughs blushed in shyness,

    And the houris whispered to the eyes.

  4. تفنن الحب في عشاقها فبدت

    من سحر مقلتها الوطفا أفانينُ

    Love perfected itself in her lovers,

    So that her eyelashes' magic made them selfless.

  5. من طرفها وفؤادي يستعين على

    تعذيب طرفي فتانٌ ومفتونُ

    My heart seeks help from her glance,

    As her beauty tortures and captivates my eyes.

  6. غراء مشرقة الخدين تبسم عن

    مثل العقيق وفيه الدر مكنونُ

    Radiant are her rosy cheeks - she smiles

    Like carnelian with hidden pearls.

  7. سودٌ ذوائبها بيضٌ ترائبها

    حمرٌ غلائلها فيهنّ تلوينُ

    Black are her tresses, white her neck,

    Red her braids - varied hues in them.

  8. إن واعدت حبها فالميم مبسمها

    والياء طرتها والحاجب النونُ

    If she promises love, her "meem" is her smile,

    Her "yaa" her allure, her eyebrows the "noon."

  9. دنوت منها فنادتني محاجرها

    غياك إياك سيف اللحظ مسنونُ

    I approached her and she called to me -

    "Beware! The sword of her glance is sharp."

  10. من تلقه تلقهُ حبّا أخا شغفٍ

    بها فخامرها إن الهوى دينُ

    Whoever meets her, meets love, O passion's brother -

    For desire is a religion.

  11. تملكت كبدي الحري محاسنها

    كما تملك كل الفضل تحسينُ

    Her free spirit has conquered my liver -

    As excellence conquers all merit.

  12. العالم البارع السامي بسؤددهِ

    للفضل والمجد إيضاحٌ وتبينُ

    That brilliant, lofty sage -

    Clarifying and elucidating excellence and glory.

  13. مولىً توشح بالأداب فافتخرت

    وقد توشحها حسنٌ وتزيينُ

    My master adorned with etiquette - so I took pride

    When adorned by beauty and decoration.

  14. بدرٌ فضائلهُ الغراء مشرقةٌ

    وصدر مجدٍ ببحر العلم مشحونُ

    A full moon whose outstanding merits shine,

    A breast filled with knowledge of the sciences.

  15. تتلو المعاني لنا من شعره حكماً

    سحر البيان بذاك الشعر مقرونُ

    He recites verses to us, wisdom from his poetry -

    Eloquence intertwined with that verse.

  16. أذاب دراً بشمس الفضل ثم أتى

    بذاك قولاً بليغاً وهو موزونُ

    He melted pearls with the sun of virtue, then came

    With eloquent, well-composed words.

  17. فالجود من كفه الفياض منطلقٌ

    والخير في قوله الفصال مرهونُ

    Generosity flows from his generous palm -

    And goodness is guaranteed by his eloquent speech.

  18. قد أوجبت ممكنات الحمد راحته

    وفي المعالي بها عزٌّ وتمكينُ

    You have made praise obligatory by your possibilities -

    And through them, power and firmness.

  19. مولاي خذ بنت شعرٍ بالمديح أتت

    والشعر يعشقه الغر الميامينُ

    My master, accept these lines of poetry that came

    As poetry is loved by the delicate.

  20. عذرأ تهدى دعاءً من أخي شجنٍ

    فؤاده من خطوب الدهر ممنونُ

    An apology sent as a prayer from a brother of passion -

    His heart afflicted by the calamities of fate.

  21. فاسلم ودم يا أبا العليا أخا نعمٍ

    وعز مجدك ممدودٌ ومأمون

    So be safe and secure, O father of the sublime, O brother of favour -

    Your glory and honour are guaranteed and protected.
