1. يا خليلاً لم أكن عنه خلي

    وفؤادي في هواه مبتلي

    O my friend, I was never unfaithful to him

    And my heart is afflicted with longing for him

  2. انني مذ غبت عنكم لم يزل

    شخصك الباهي لدى قلبي جلي

    Indeed, since I was absent from you all

    His radiant face remains clear in my heart

  3. يا سقى الله أويقات مضت

    معكم في خير ذاك المنزل

    O may God water the times that have passed

    With you all, in the goodness of that home

  4. وبيت الدين أياما لنا

    افتديها بأهيلي اذ تلي

    And the home of faith, days for us

    I would ransom them with my family when they are recited

  5. يا رعى الله ثنيّات بها

    قد زهت في كل ربع خضل

    O may God shepherd the slopes on which

    Flowers have blossomed in every meadow

  6. حلل باهت بمجد وسمت

    في علاها يا لها من حلل

    Worn out garments with glory and marks

    In their highest, oh what garments!

  7. كيف لم يخضع لها كل حمى

    وبشير السعد فيها ينجلي

    How has every zealous one not submitted to them

    And the herald of joy in it is uncovered

  8. ما بها عيب سوى من زارها

    يسلو عن أوطانه والطلل

    It has no fault but for one who visited it

    Asked about his homelands and ruins

  9. وأنا ممن سلا أوطانه

    عند ما قد زرتها في أملي

    And I am one who asked about his home

    When I visited it with my hopes

  10. غير أني لو تراني وأنا

    بالمغيرية ذات الوحل

    Except that if you were to see me

    In Al-Mughayriyah of the mud

  11. كم ترى من رجل ذي همة

    واقعا في حيضها كالجمل

    How many men of ambition do you see

    Fallen into its valley like camels

  12. وتراني غارقا في وحلها

    وعصاي في يدي كالمنجل

    And you see me drowning in its mud

    With my staff in my hand like a sickle

  13. قلت أني صانع الفخار أو

    راعيا للشاة أو للإبل

    I said that I am a potter

    Or a shepherd of sheep or camels

  14. لا تسل عن سمع أقوال علت

    للمعنى مثل ريح الشمال

    Do not ask about hearing lofty words

    To the meaning like the wind of the north

  15. وينادوني تقدم يا فتى

    لجدال مع أديب وأعجل

    And they call me come forward, O youth

    For a debate with a literate man, make haste

  16. ودخان النار مذ عم بنا

    ضيق النفس وأبكى مقلي

    And the smoke of the fire since it enveloped us

    Narrowness of breath made me weep copiously

  17. ووقوع الدلف في هاماتنا

    كدفوف ضربت في جدل

    And the falling of the drizzle on our brows

    Like drums beaten with intensity

  18. ونفيخ الريح من أبوابنا

    في صفير فاق صوت البلبل

    And the blowing of the wind from our doors

    In a whistling that surpassed the nightingale’s voice

  19. فكأنا قد صبغنا وجهنا

    زعفراناً أو نقيع الحنظل

    So it is as if we dyed our faces

    With saffron or fenugreek broth

  20. أوحشونا من دخان مظلم

    مقل الأجفان حب الفلفل

    The smoke made us lonely

    Squeezing the eyelids, stinging like peppers

  21. حبذا أثوابنا منقوشة

    صاغها الدلف بأنواع الحلي

    Best are our clothes embroidered

    Made by the drizzle in all kinds of finery

  22. كلما كفكفت عينا سجمت

    قال في الظلما دخان فاهطلي

    Whenever I rub an eye, it turns red

    He said in the darkness, "Smoke, spill down"

  23. كيف لا والسقف نادي فوقنا

    ودعوا الأحباب قبل المرحل

    How not, when the ceiling yells above us

    "Farewell to loved ones before departing"

  24. وترى أخشابه مكسورة

    وكذا ينفي عظيم الوجل

    And you see its wood broken

    And thus the great fear drives away

  25. ببشير المجد ذي الفضل الذي

    قد حبانا كل خير مجزل

    By Basheer of glory, of outstanding merit

    Who has granted us every good thing plentiful

  26. الأمير المرتضي رب الندى

    من برؤياه شفاء العلل

    The Prince Al-Murtada, Lord of dew

    From seeing him, cure of illnesses

  27. حيث أني كل صبح ومسا

    فائز من كفه بالقبل

    Where every morning and evening

    I am victorious by his embrace

  28. لا أبالي باسى الدهر ولا

    من تداني كل خطب مشكل

    I do not care about the misery of fate or

    Every difficult issue that comes close

  29. خلّد اللَه لنا أيامه

    في هناء وسرور مقبل

    May God immortalize for us his days

    In bliss and joyous prosperity
