1. هناءً مديداً بدرهُ يتوقدُ

    وجدّا جديداً لم يزل يتجدد

    Long-lasting joy, its full moon rises

    Fresh delight, renewing without cease

  2. واقبل بالإقبال بدر محاسنٍ

    يميد بهِ من مائس القد املد

    Welcome with welcome, O moon of beauties

    It sways with grace, though old in years

  3. غزالٌ إذا ما اهتز بالعجب أو رنا

    تسابق فتكاً أسمرٌ ومهند

    A gazelle, when it sways in wonder or softness

    Dark amber and white musk rush to outdo each other

  4. تعود نهب العاشقين قلوبهم

    وكل امرءٍ يصبو لما يتعود

    The hearts of lovers are plundered

    And each soul desires what it is accustomed to

  5. يجورُ على عشاقه وهو عادلٌ

    ويقسو على أهل الهوى وهو أغيد

    He is unfair to his lovers though just

    And harsh on those who love, though gentle

  6. أخا الظبي عدني بالوصال وإن يكن

    كما علموا إلّا تفي العهد خرّد

    O brother to the antelope, unite me with the beloved, even if

    As they know, he breaks pledges and covenants

  7. وحقك لم يدرِ العذول بأنني

    رشفت اللمى من فيك والَله يشهدُ

    By your right, the one who withdraws knows not that I

    Have sipped the wine of love from you, and God bears witness

  8. ولكن حديثي فاض شهداً ولذةً

    فادرك ما قد كان ذاك المفندُ

    But my words overflowed with sweetness and pleasure

    So grasp what has passed, O confidant

  9. رأى أحمر الخدين أبيض عارض

    فصد وحظي عند جفنيه أسودُ

    He saw the red of my cheeks, white complexion

    So he ignored me and my fortune near his eyelids turned black

  10. كما صدت الأيام عني وأعرضت

    وانكرني منها وفاءٌ وموعدُ

    Just as the days turned away from me and ignored me

    Denying me loyalty and promise

  11. نديمي ادر كاساً كأن حبابها

    على تاجها بالزاهرات منضّدُ

    My friend, pass me a cup whose bubbles

    Are strewn with flowers over its crown

  12. يعربد في صدر الكؤوس مزاجها

    ويحلم رشفاً فهو صاحٍ معربدُ

    It frolics in the bosom of the goblets, its mixture

    Dreaming of a sip, awake and wanton

  13. يزف على الندمان مثل عروسة

    فكل لديها قيس ليلى ومعبدُ

    It swoons over the revelers like a bride

    To each, it is Qays to Layla, their trysting place

  14. فخذها إذا رق النسيم وأشرقت

    مباسم أقمار وجاد المغرد

    Take it when the breeze is gentle and the new moons shine

    With smiles of moons, and the warbler sings

  15. بروضٍ ذكت نشراً وعرفاً كأنها

    صفات خليل المجد تتلى وتنشدُ

    In a meadow whose branches and petals are as though

    The attributes of the praised beloved are recited and sung

  16. وزيرٌ إذا نالت يداه ولايةً

    يوأزرها منه جمالٌ وسؤددُ

    A minister, when power comes into his hands

    Is advised by its beauty and fortune

  17. تولى البحار الزاخرات فأصبحت

    سلاماً وسلماً موجها يتمهدُ

    He took over the abundant seas and they became

    Safely tranquil, its waves smoothed

  18. وقد رقصت أمناً خلايا سفائن

    على لجج التيار وهو يغردُ

    The hulls of ships danced securely

    On the currents as it sang

  19. همامٌ كريمٌ بل جواد سميذعٌ

    حليم مجيد بل مغيثٌ ومنجدُ

    A noble, generous steed, a horse of pedigree

    Forbearing, glorious, a giver of aid and helper

  20. بعدلٍ إذا أمضى الأمور موشحٌ

    وبالنصر إن جاءَ النزال مقلدُ

    With justice, when he executes affairs, adorned

    And with victory, if battle comes, armed

  21. سما رفعةً فازداد قدراً مقامهُ

    جليل وللعليا خليلٌ وسيّد

    He ascended in rank, his position grew

    Sublime, the Sublime's friend and master

  22. لقد انهل الأقلام عذب بلاغةٍ

    وأورد ظمأن الظبا نعم موردُ

    The pens tasted sweet eloquence

    And quenched the thirst of yearning gazelles at a good watering place

  23. هو الليث إلّا أنهُ غير مفتر

    وكالغيث لكن قطر كفيه عسجدُ

    He is the lion but not ferocious

    And rain but his palms do not pour violently

  24. لبابك يا مولاي جئت مهنئاً

    ومثلي فيما جئت ليس لهُ يدُ

    To your court I came congratulating, my master

    And none like me has come with what I bring

  25. ولكنني وافيتُ بالمدح والهنا

    كما قد أتى قبلاً سليمان هدهدُ

    Yet I conveyed praise and congratulations

    As Solomon's hoopoe came before

  26. فدم بالهنا والسعد ترق معالياً

    تضيء بها الأيام حسناً وتسعدُ

    Stay with fortune and joy, climbing in rank

    The days shine beautifully and grow fortunate with them

  27. تولّيت بحراً مثل جودك فائضاً

    ومثلك في الهيجا يهيج ويزبدُ

    I was appointed over a sea of generosity like yours

    That rages and foams like you in excitement

  28. تشابهتما لكن فيك عذوبةً

    وفيك وقاراً فيهما أنت مفردُ

    You two are alike, but yours has sweetness

    And composure - in both you are unique

  29. أبى اللَه إلا أن تكون أخا على

    ويشرق من علياك للمجد فرقدُ

    God willed that you be the Caliph's brother

    And the rays of your sublime origin shine with glory

  30. بلغت معالي المكرمات فأصبحت

    إليك أحاديث المكارم تسندُ

    You attained the heights of generosity and so

    Narratives of nobility lean on you

  31. تهنت بك العلياء وافترّ ثغرها

    سروراً وقالت وهي تثني وتحمدُ

    The sublime were delighted by you, their smiles showed

    Joy, praising and lauding you

  32. ولما تولى البحر ثاني مرةً

    خليل المعالي والوزير المؤيدُ

    And when the sea was entrusted to the friend of the eminent

    The blessed minister, for a second time

  33. تسامى شراع بالهناء مؤرخاً

    سرا بالخليل اليم والعود أحمدُ

    The sail of congratulations billowed

    Secretly saying: the friend, the Yemeni, Ahmad
