أبرقٌ نراه أم سنا الصبح حاضر

أم الثغر من مختارة الحسن ظاهر

Is it the dawning we see flashing or the brilliant morning present?

Or is it the smile from the chosen beauty apparent?

نعم بالسنا لاحت لصبّ مولع

دلالا ونور الوجه باه وباهر

Yes, with radiance the dawn emerged for an enamored youth

Guiding, and the light of her face gives splendor.

غزالة حسن غازلتني بمقلة

لها في قلوب العاشقين سرائر

A gazelle, the beauty flirted with me with a glance

That has in the hearts of lovers intimacies.

وبهكنة كاللدن قدّاً ولم يزل

عليه فؤاد الصب طاو وطائر

And with coquetry like silk, standing tall, never ceasing

Upon it lies the heart of the youth circling and fluttering.

تصول بجفن مرهف من لحاظه

لقتلي وقلبي فيه صاب وصابر

She swirls with a tender eyelash from her glances

To slay me while my heart in it remains patient and steadfast.

وتبسم عن المى لماه معطر

به الطلع والعناب زاه وزاهر

And she smiles with fresh sweetness perfumed

With it the buds and berries appear and shine.

وتسفر عن ليل وصبح كليهما

اقلهما غصن من البان خاطر

And she unveils night and morning alike

The less of them a branch of existence concerns.

لها أيطلا ظبي وعيان فيهما

سواد قلوب الناظرين نواظر

She has glances of a gazelle and eyes within them

The darkness of the beholders' sights.

وما الراح إلا من عصير شفاهما

ينجمه كاس من الدر عاطر

And the wine is only from the nectar of their lips

Whose chalice of pearls exhales fragrance.

وما الصاب إلا ما رشفت من النوى

فياليتها بالقرب يوما تجابر

And the morning draught is only what dripped from the dew

Oh, would that she were near to converse one day.

رأتني فقالت كيف حالك والهوى

فقلت لها هل كيف ليل وعامر

She saw me and asked how I was and of passion

I said to her, "How can there be wellness while lovesick?"

غرامي غريمي والصباء صبابتي

وقلبي وطرفي فيك ساه وساهر

My love makes me lovesick, and the youth are my remedy

While my heart and gaze in you keeps vigil.

كأن بني يزداد حشو حشاشتي

فتكت بها سقما أأنت مساور

It's as if the ecstasy of my fervor intensifies

So it stricken me with illness. Are you charmed?

نديمي صح بي أن صحبي تحملوا

وسر بي فسربي كلهنّ جآذر

My friend called me to be patient with my companions

And confide in me, so I confided, all raging.

ورب حبيب هادم الصبر هادمي

براحته قد زاد والليل زائر

How many beloveds there are who shatter patience

With ease they increased while the night advanced.

أغنّ غضيض يستضيء بوجهه

وتستره خوف الرقيب الضفائر

I sing the song of a love whose face illuminates

And his timidity hides behind the veils.

فبتنا وفمّ يرشف الخمر من فم

غراما إلى أن لاح لليل آخر

So we stayed up as the wine wet our lips

Passionately until another night emerged.

ولاح لنا صبح منير كأنه

بشيرٌ اتتنا من سناه البشائر

And there emerged for us a brilliant dawn as if

It were a bearer of good news with its radiance bringing tidings.

هو الجنب لاطي فيه معن وحاتم

وفي الجنب لاطيّ بل الجود ناشر

He is the side flanked with glory and esteem

And in valor he flanked, indeed spreading generosity.

بشير يشير الفضل في فضل روضه

كما فاخرت بالفضل فيه المفاخر

A bearer giving tidings of merit in the merit of his meadow

As the superior vied in virtue therein.

ويسري إلى جدواه سار ومدلج

كما بالعلى سارت إليه الأكابر

And he sets out to his stream, walking proud

As the great walked proudly to him.

قد ارتفعت مختارة العز خيرة

كما رفعت للجود فيها المنابر

Excellence cried out and he answered it

With a thrust enemies flee from, Amr and Amer.

وطلّ على اطلالها من بشيرها

يبشر ان البذل هام وهامر

Generous, wholesome, whether in peace or seeing

The feet of enemies, he is harmful and cunning.

وما حلها غاد ألمّ به الأسى

من البؤس إلّا وهو بالبر صادر

Ask the horsemen about his deadliness and draw

His sharp swords. Wrathful and intense inform you.

تربع بالغابات منها غضنفر

همام جريء بالجحافل زائرُ

Ask the riders about the pulling of his generosity

And his giving. Guided and guided teach you.

مجيد له نصر من السعد خادمٌ

ويخدمه بالحرب رمحٌ وباتر

He strove striving with glory therein, so it

Submitted to him, even the orbits.

وما نادت الهياء إلّا أجابها

بطعن تحامي منه عمرو وعامر

The heights saw him and loved landmarks

With his call therein of might, abundant and plenty.

كريمٌ سليمٌ يوم سلم وإن رأى

ركاب الأعادي فهو ضار وضائر

Unrestrained in conferring honors, owning

The reins of heights, he is open, initiating.

الأسائل الفرسان عن فتكه وسل

صوارمه يخبرك عضبٌ وضامر

Suckled on the milk of glory, valiant lion

He has in the necks of foes achievements.

وسل وانشد الركبان عن سحب جوده

وعن بذله يعلمك سار وساير

To you comes the felicity’s bearer, virtues’ orchard

Your heights may have risen from thought early.

سعى ساعيا بالمجد فيها يودّه

فدانت له الافلاك حتى الدوائر

To it appears a gaze from the son of bounty

Dazzling, and from attaining your merit, falling short.

رأته المعالي فاستحبت معالما

بناديه فيها العز واف ووافر

So you remain with luminous good fortune and rising

With its radiance the misguided see the light.

طليق عنان المكرمات وملالك

زمام المعالي فهو باد مبادرُ

And your star in the peak of felicity shining

And your fortunes supremely high and commanding.

رضيع لبان المجد شهم مهندٌ

له في رقاب الحاسين مآثر

إليك بشير السعد هيفاء غادة

لعلياك قد زفّت من الفكر باكر

يلوح لها طرف من ابن كرامة

غضيض وعن إدراك فضلك قاصر

فلا زلت ذا سعد منير ومطلع

بغرته الغراء يستهدي جائر

ونجمك في أوج السعادة ساطع

وسعدك بالعلياء ناه وآمر
