1. استعمل العَصفَ بعد الدّبغ مَقلوُبا

    لتعتدي طالباً طوراً ومطلوُبا

    Use the tanned leather upside down

    To attack seeking glory and desire

  2. واسكَر من الرَّاحِ وأفهم ما اشرتُ له

    فليس يحتاج لا كأساً ولا كُوبا

    And get drunk on winds and understand what I bought it for

    It needs neither a cup nor a goblet

  3. واحمل على القومَ واحلُم إن همو حملوا

    فأنت ما زلتَ غلاباً ومغلُوبا

    Bear down on the people and be determined if they bear down

    You have always been a victor and a vanquished

  4. لك الجوادان فاركب ما تشاءُ ودَع

    مالا تشاءُ مع الظلمات مجنوبا

    You have the two steeds, so mount what you wish and leave

    What you don’t wish in the darkness bent

  5. قد أدَّبتكَ نواريزُ مفَرَّقةُ

    حتى لقد صرتَ لا تحتاج تأديبا

    My scattered pearls have taught you

    Until you no longer need teaching

  6. وطالما استصلح الجزرَّاء نحركَ في

    يوم الأضاحي ولم يستصلح النَبيا

    And the butcher has long purified the sacrifice

    On the day of Eid but did not purify the Prophet

  7. أذكرتنا أرشيبراً إذ ركبتَّ وإذ

    وأصبَحت بالتاج تاج الخوص مَعصُوبا

    You reminded us of Archiebras when you rode and when

    You wore the crown, the crown of palm fronds bent

  8. فاستوف غير ضجور بالإمارة ما

    على جبينك مما قد كان مكتوبا

    So take from the emirate without reluctance what

    Was written on your forehead

  9. والق الأيادي واقبل من هديتها

    ما كان من قوص أو إخميم مجنوبا

    Extend your hands and accept from their gifts

    What was made of bent palm fronds or twisted fabric

  10. يا شاعراً لم يفقه اليومَ راوية

    يروى المجون إذ لم يَرَوِ تشبباً

    Oh poet who today does not understand the narrator

    Who narrates vulgarity though did not taste affection

  11. لو أنه قد أدرك الشيخ الصريع فتى ال

    قطد صَّارِ لم يرو إلا عَنكَ أَسلُوبا

    If only he had known the fallen elder, the youth

    Would only have narrated your style
