You deserve aid in the distress of one lost,

Led to passion with no restraint,

Who lingered by the tents on soft carpets,

Then left with his heart amid the tents.

O noble Arab, why allow my murder?

Are not the Arabs known for mercy?

I asked you, breeze of the wind, convey

To my beloved a greeting of peace.

He has taken my heart, a tender fawn,

Gentle of bosom, slender of frame.

He shed my blood, and my blood was sacrosanct,

Alas, how fine to shed the sacrosanct!

The phantom of you harbored in my heart

Is armed with glances and arrows.

A day with you estranged is like a month,

A month, did you but know, like a thousand years.

God's peace be upon one no peace can touch,

When lightning flashes on the undeserving!
