أبرقٌ بدا من جانِبِ الغَور لامعُ

أمِ ارتفَعَتْ عن وجهِ ليلى البراقع

A light flashed from the side of the valley, shining,

Or did the veils rise from Layla's radiant face?

أَنَارُ الغضا ضاءتْ وسلمى بذي الغضا

أمِ ابتَسَمتْ عمّا حكتهُ المدامع

The dark lit up and Salma smiled, or did

The teardrops smile at the tales they told?

أنْشرُ خُزامى فاح أم عَرْفُ حاجرٍ

بأُمّ القُرَى أم عِطْرُ عَزَّةَ ضائع

Shall I spread my carpet, and scent the air,

Or is it the fragrance of Hajar in Umm Al-Qura?

ألا ليتَ شِعري هل سُلَيْمَى مقيمة

بِوادي الحِمى حيثُ المُتَيَّمُ والع

Oh, would that I knew! Is Salima staying

In Wadi Al-Hima, where the lovelorn poet dwells?

وهل لَعلَعَ الرّعْدُ الهَتونُ بِلَعلَعٍ

وهل جادَها صَوب من المُزنِ هامع

Did thunder rumble in Liwa with rumbling,

And pour towards us from Al-Muzn, lightning?

وهل أَرِدَنْ ماء العُذَيْب وحاجِر

جِهَاراً وسِرُّ الليلِ بالصّبح شائع

Did it rain on Udhayb and Hajir openly,

While the secret of night spreads at dawn?

وهل قاعةُ الوعساء مخْضَرّةُ الرُّبى

وهل ما مضَى فيها من العيش راجع

Is the hall of Al-Wu'sa green with vegetation?

Or has what was past returned to it?

وهل برُبَى نجْدٍ فتوضحَ مسنِدٌ

أُهَيلَ النّقا عمّا حوَتْه الأضالع

In the upland of Najd, does a lover's tryst appear?

What secrets do hearts conceal!

وهل بِلِوى سَلْعٍ يُسَلْ عن مُتَيَّمٍ

بكاظِمَةٍ ماذا به الشّوقُ صانع

In the thickets of Sul'a, do they ask about the lovelorn one

In Kazima, how is yearning treating him?

وهل عَذَبَاتُ الرّنِد يُقْطَفُ نورها

وهل سَلَماتٌ بالحِجاز أيانع

Are the sweet fruits of ar-Rind ready for plucking?

Are the palms of Hijaz full grown?

وهل أَثَلاتُ الجِزعِ مُثمِرةٌ وهَل

عُيونُ عوادي الدّهرِ عنها هواجع

Do the trees of sadness bear fruit?

Have the eyes of the days turned away from them?

وهل قاصراتُ الطرف عِينٌ بعالجٍ

على عهدِيَ المَعهودِ أمْ هوَ ضائع

Do the shy glances have healing for my pact,

Or has it been lost from the faithful promise?

وهل ظَبَيَاتُ الرّقْمَتَيِن بُعَيْدَنَا

أَقَمَنا بها أمْ دونَ ذلكَ مانع

Are the gazelles of the two meadows far from us?

Did they stay there, or was that prevented?

وهل فَتياتٌ بالغُوَيْرِ يُرينَنَي

مَرابعَ نُعْمٍ نِعْمَ تلكَ المَرابع

Do the girls of Al-Ghuwair show me

Pastures of bliss - what bliss those pastures!

وهل ظِلُّ ذاك الضّال شرقيّ ضارجٍ

ظَلِيلٌ فقد روّتْهُ منّي المَدامع

Does the shade of that stray, east wind, still shelter me?

For my tears have watered it abundantly.

وهل عامرٌ من بَعْدِنا شِعبُ عامرٍ

وهل هوَ يوماً للمُحبّينَ جامع

Is Sha'b Aamir inhabited after us?

Will it one day unite the lovers?

وهل أَمَّ بيتَ اللِه يا أُمّ مالِكٍ

عُرَيْبٌ لهُمْ عندي جميعاً صنائع

O Umm Malik, does pilgrimage to Allah's House continue?

For them, I have skills of every kind.

وهل نَزَلَ الرّكبُ العِراقي مُعَرِّفاً

وهل شُرِعَت نحو الخِيام شرائع

Has the Iraqi caravan arrived in recognition?

Have laws been enacted towards the tents?

وهل رَقَصَت بالمأزِمَين قلائصٌ

وهل للقِباب البيضِ فيها تَدَافُع

Have the dancing girls danced rhythmically?

Is there jostling for the white domes among them?

وهل لي بجمع الشمل في جمع مُسعِدٌ

وهل لليالي الخَيْف بالعُمْر بائع

Is there for me a chance to reunite happily?

Are there sellers for the nights of separation?

وهل سَلّمت سَلمَى على الحَجَرِ الذي

بِه العهدُ والتفّت عليِه الأصابع

Did Salma greet the rock where the pact lies,

And turn her fingers over it?

وهل رَضَعَت من ثَدي زمزَم رَضْعَةً

فلا حُرّمت يوماً عليها المراضع

Did she suckle from the breast of Zamzam once,

So she would never be deprived of suckling again?

لعلّ أُصَيْحَابي بمكّة يُبْرِدُوا

بِذِكْرِ سُلَيْمَى ما تُجِنّ الأضالع

Perhaps my friends in Mecca will cool

The heat of longing for Salima in their minds.

وعلّ اللُّيَيْلاَتِ التي قد تصرّمت

تعودُ لنا يوماً فيَظْفَرَ طامعُ

The nights that have passed will return to us one day,

And the hopeful will triumph!

وَيفْرَحَ محزونٌ ويَحْيَا مُتَيَّمٌ

ويأنَسَ مُشْتَاقٌ ويلتَذّ سامعُ

The sorrowful will rejoice, the lovelorn will live,

The longing will find company, and the listener will delight!
