أشاهدُ معنَى حُسْنكُمْ فَيَلَذُّ لي

خُضُوعي لَدَيْكُمْ في الهوى وتَذَلّلي

I see the meaning of your beauty, so my submission to you in love becomes sweet to me,

And I long for the melody that you possess,

وأشتاقُ للمَغْنَى الذي أنْتُمُ بِهِ

وَلَوْلاَكُمُ ما شَاقَنِي ذِكْرُ منْزل

Without you, the thought of an abode would not have tormented me,

So by Allah, how many nights have I spent

فَلِلَّهِ كم من ليلةٍ قد قَطَعْتُها

بِلَذّةِ عيشٍ والرّقِيب بمَعزِل

In the pleasure of living, while the watcher was absent,

Moving my wine cups, while the beloved was my drinking companion,

ونَقْلِي مُدَامي والحَبيبُ مُنادِمي

وأقْداحُ أفْراحِ المَحَبَّةِ تَنْجَلي

And the cups of love's joy were passing around,

And I attained my desire, beyond what I had hoped for,

ونِلْتُ مرادي فوق ما كُنْتُ راجياً

فوا طَرَبا لو تَمّ هذا ودامَ لي

So oh what rapture, if this would last for me,

My critic reproached me, he does not know what love is,

لَحاني عَذُولي ليس يَعْرِف ما الهوَى

وأينَ الشجيُّ المُسْتَهامُ مِنَ الخَلي

And where is the ardent lover in isolation from the friend,

So leave me and whoever I love, for my envier has died,

فدَعْنِي ومَن أهوى فقد مات حاسدي

وغابَ رقيبي عند قُرْبِ مُواصِلي

And my watcher has been absent since I drew near my beloved.
