أراك إذا أجرت على أميرٍ
وثيق عرا الأمانة والجِوارِ
I see you: when you grant my emir protection against me,
you bind fast the bonds of pledged trust and sanctuary.
فإني لا أبثّك بثَّ فقري
ولكني أحاذر من طِمار
For I do not pour out to you the anguish of my poverty;
but I fear a fall from a towering height.
أعوذُ من العقوبةِ يابن حربٍ
ومعقِد ما عقدت من الإِزار
I seek refuge from punishment, O son of Harb,
by the knot of the waistcloth you have tied.
