1. I shall counsel Qays—the Qays of ʿAylān—for indeed I

am well qualified to counsel you, by virtue of kinship and common descent.

  2. And how could I withhold counsel from them, when I see

Ziyād’s cauldrons boiling, though no offense has been done?

  3. So do not think yourselves safe from him; take the middle course, and you will be safe.

Refrain from reproach, and you will escape the ways of folly.

  4. Hold fast to bitter truth; do not pass beyond it

to anything else—for truth is among the clearest paths.

  5. Do not revile your forebears; show compassion to one another

in doing right—for righteousness is among the noblest deeds.

  6. And beware of reviling your rulers,

lest calamity leave you poised upon the rope’s precarious edge.

  7. For as for Ziyād, there is no man of power in his land

besides him; and he has dealt fairly with you and given you time.

  8. So do not drive him to shed your blood,

for Ziyād is neither a coward nor a contemptible weakling.
