أضحت سُلَيمى بعدَ طولِ عِتابِ

تَجرُّم ونفاد غَربِ شبَاب

After prolonged estrangement and the passing of youth's vigor,

Sulayma is reconciled though still nursing hurt feelings.

قد أزمعتُ بصريمتي وتجنُّبي

وتهوُّكٍ من ذاك في إِعتابِ

I have resolved to avert my eyes and keep my distance,

And cease longing for her reproaches.

لما رأيتُ القَصرَ أُغلِقَ بابُه

وتعلَّقت همدانُ بالأسباب

When I saw the palace gate locked,

And spiderwebs clinging to the walls,

وَرأيتُ أصحابَ الدقيقِ كأنَّهم

حولَ البيوتِ ثعالبُ الأَعنابِ

And saw the weevil-like creatures around the houses

Like foxes raiding the grapevines,

ورأيتُ أبواب الأَزقَّةِ حَولَنا

دربت بكلِّ هَراوةٍ وذُباب

And saw the alleys' doors around us

Barricaded with every refuse and cobweb,

أيقنتُ أنَّ خيولَ شيعةِ راشدٍ

لم يبقَ منها قَيسُ أَيرِ ذُبابِ

I knew the steeds of Rashid's supporters

Were gone except for the buzzing of flies.
