حَتّى إِذا بَعَثَ الصَباحُ فِراقَنا
وَرَأَينَ مِن وَجهِ الظَلامِ صُدودا
When at last the morning summoned us to part,
And they saw the young man’s face set on turning away,
جَرَتِ الدُموعُ وَقُلنَ فيكَ جَلادَةٌ
عَنّا وَنَكرَهُ أَن تَكونَ جَليدا
Their tears streamed, and they said, “You have the fortitude
To part from us—and we hate that you are so steadfast.”
