1. ʿAbda, truly I am all longing for you—

    longing to meet; but how can I ever meet you?

  2. By God, I yearn for the enchantment of those eyes—

    —of yours, yet fear the fatal falls of lovers.

  3. And I dread the guardsman, the army’s provost—

    who sweeps the innocent in among the libertines.

  4. So be patient, as I have been; for—

    patience is a share of virtuous character.

  5. Indeed, I am of the descendants of ʿUqayl ibn Kaʿb;

    My station is the sword’s among the adornments worn at the neck.
