1. بَكِّرا صاحِبَيَّ قَبلَ الهَجيرِ

    إِن ذاكَ النَجاحَ في التَبكيرِ

    My friends, rise early before the dawn call

    Truly, success lies in early rising

  2. لا تَكونا عَلَيَّ كَالخَفَضِ الرَي

    يِضِ أَمسى بِنورِهِ غَيرَ نورِ

    Be not to me as the waning crescent

    That yesterday shone brightly, but today with another light

  3. أولِعَ الناسُ بِالمَلامَةِ وَالمَر

    ءُ عَلى خُطَّةٍ مِن التقديرِ

    People blame according to a plan of fate

    And questioning is the cure for the blind, so rise

  4. وَشِفاءُ العَيِّ السُؤالُ فَقوما

    سائِلا وَالبيانُ عِندَ الخَبيرِ

    Asking, and wisdom lies with the expert

    Do I refuse bounty and limp along

  5. هَل أُسامي العُلا وَأُعوِصُ بِالخَص

    مِ وَأُعري مَحَجَّة الخَيتَعورِ

    Bare of argument, wearing the cloak of shame?

    Who remains in the darkness of hand and desire

  6. مَن يُقِم في السَوادِ وَاليَدِ وَالإِغ

    رامِ زيراً فَإِنَّني غَيرُ زيرِ

    Bowed down when I am no bowman?

    It is not for me to weep for a roofless abode

  7. لَيسَ مِنّي المُقامُ أَبكي عَلى الرَب

    عِ خَلا أَهلُهُ لِبيَنِ شَطيرِ

    While its people smile cheerfully

    Truly, in the intimacy of kings there is

  8. إِنَّ في نَدوَةِ المُلوكِ لَشُغلاً

    عَن رَبابٍ وَزَينَبٍ وَقَذورِ

    No thought for song or Zainab or filth

    My excuse has been youth, equated

  9. قَد تَعَلَّلتُ بِالشَبابِ وَعُلِّل

    تُ بِبيضٍ مِثلَ النَحارِجِ حورِ

    With whiteness like that of splendorous nymphs

    Bright of face, they charm God himself

  10. مُشرِقاتُ الوُجوهِ يَسحَبنَ لِلَّه

    وِ عُيوناً مَكسورَةً بِفُتورِ

    With broken gazes and languor

    Virtuous, pure, flashing like a mirage

  11. حافِظاتٍ عَلى الأَخِلَّةِ ما طا

    بَ وَأَبرَقنَ كَالسَرابِ الغَرورِ

    Of vain glory

    They converse laughing like martyrs' blood

  12. يَتَساقَينَ بِالمَضاحِكِ كَالشَه

    دِ مَشوباً بِماءِ مُزنٍ نَميرِ

    Mixed with pure, refreshing water

    The heaviness of their limbs broke my heart

  13. وَثِقالُ الأَعجازِ قَطَّعنَ قَلبي

    بِحَديثٍ لَذٍّ وَدَهرٍ قَصيرِ

    With sweet talk and a fleeting age

    I was content with little from them

  14. وَرَضيتُ القَليلَ مِنهُنَّ إِنّي

    مِن قَليلٍ لَواثِقٌ بِكَثيرِ

    For I trust the little to bring much

    I sought the elder born from the youngest

  15. وَطَلَبتُ الكَبيرَ بِالأَصغَرِ الأَص

    غَرِ إِنَّ الكَبيرَ بَعدَ الصَغيرِ

    Since elders come after youngsters

    She brought me into her boudoir until

  16. دَيدَني ذاكَ في الدُجُنَّةِ حَتّى اِن

    جابَ عَنّي الصِبى طُلوعَ القَتيرِ

    Dawn aroused me instead of the singing girl

    Then passion overwhelmed me and dreams returned

  17. ثُمَّ رَثَّ الهَوى وَراجَعَني الحِل

    مُ وَرُدَّت عارِيَّةُ المُستَعيرِ

    And the borrowed regalia was stripped bare

    I left pretty trinkets

  18. وَتَرَكتُ المُصابِياتِ مِنَ الأَش

    ياءِ صُوراً يَلمَعنَ أَو غَيرَ صُورِ

    Images that shine or others without images

  19. لَيسَ كُلُّ السُرورِ يَبقي نَعيماً

    رُبَّ غَيٍّ يَدُبُّ تَحتَ السُرورِ

    Not all gladness remains delight

    How much sorrow creeps beneath gladness!

  20. ذَهَبَت لَذَّةُ النِساءِ فَلا أَل

    قى نَعيماً إِلّا حَديثَ الذُكورِ

    The joy of women has gone. I find

    No pleasure but talking with men

  21. وَشَبابي قَد كانَ مِن لَذَّةِ العَي

    شِ فَأَودى وَغالَهُ اِبنا سَميرِ

    My youth was of the pleasure of living

    And it destroyed me—after youth comes the bier

  22. وَكَذاكَ الجَديدُ يَبلى عَلى الدَه

    رِ وَلا بُدَّ لاِمرِئٍ مِن عَشيرِ

    So does the new wear out over time

    And no person avoids his fate

  23. وَدَعاني إِلى فَتيقِ بِن عَجلا

    نَ بِسَلمٍ إِحدى بَناتِ الصُدورِ

    And she invited me to her soft bed

    One of the tender girls of high breasts

  24. فَحَسرتُ الهُمومَ عَنّي بِعَزمٍ

    غَيرِ بَزلاءَ واهِنٍ مُستَشيرِ

    So I pushed away my cares with resolve

    Not weak-willed and wavering

  25. وَزَميلٍ إِذا رَأى نِقبَةَ اللَي

    لِ تَثَنّى كَالشارِبِ المَخمورِ

    With a boon companion who, seeing the evening star

    Bend down, bends like a drunken reveler

  26. بِتُّ لَيلي أَذُبُّ عَن وَجهِهِ النَو

    مَ وَما بي إِلّا اِنخِزالُ العَقيرِ

    I spend my night melting away his sleep

    And I have nothing left but frustration

  27. يَتَمَنّى مَشيَ البَلاطِ وَأُلهي

    هِ بِشعري وَكيفَ لَهوُ الحَسيرِ

    He longs to walk on carpets while I distract him

    With my poetry—and what use is yearning?

  28. مَنَّهُ بَينَ صِنعِ كِسرى فَحُلوا

    نَ فَمَرجِ العِدى فَذاتِ الصُخورِ

    I praised him among Choesroe’s heirs

    So we broke free of captivity’s shackles

  29. كُلُّ تَيهورَةٍ تَرى دونَها الخا

    لَ شُروقاً تُفضي إِلى تَيهورِ

    Every partridge sees beneath it

    Dawns giving way to other partridges

  30. وَضَعَت بَيضَها الأَنوقُ بِأَعلا

    ها وَزادَت بِها هَوادي الصُقورِ

    The mother ostrich laid her eggs on high

    And so increased the valley of falcons

  31. تَسرَحُ الدَبرُ في جَناهُ وَيَأوي

    في نِعافٍ مَحفوفَةٍ بِالوُعورِ

    The ostriches roam their pasture and take cover

    Among inaccessible, cragged places

  32. مُوحِشاتٍ رَأدَ النَهارِ وَلا تُس

    طاعَ بَينَ العِشاءِ وَالتَسحيرِ

    Desolate by day, with no rest

    To be had between dusk and dawn

  33. مِن نُواحِ الفَقيرِ لاحَ عَلى الخا

    في وَعَزفِ الصَيدانَةِ العَنقَفيرِ

    From a poor man’s lament shone

    The music of the bleating flute

  34. وَمَقامُ الأَكرادِ في شَفَقِ الصُب

    حِ عَلى رُكنِها قِيامَ النُسورِ

    The Kurds camping as dusk falls

    On its shoulder like perching eagles

  35. أًصدَعُ البَلدَةَ الغَريبَةَ بِالحَد

    دِ جِلاداً عولينَ في تَصبيرِ

    I clamor in this strange land with odes

    Lashing mercilessly without tiring

  36. لاحِقاتِ الأَطالِ عُرّينَ بِالقُض

    بِ وَماءِ الحَديدِ دونَ النُسورِ

    My verses pursue the proud

    With the sword and heated iron is no redemption

  37. يَتَصَدَّعنَ عَن شُرافِيَّةِ الأُذ

    نِ أَمونٍ في الحُندسِ الدَيجورِ

    They recoil from noble birds

    Hiding in the shaded pavilion

  38. مِن بَناتِ العِفِرنِ تَبأَرُ في الكو

    مَةِ بِأرَ العَسيفِ في الصاقورِ

    Daughters of the sand grouse alight in the sands

    On the stones of Al-Saqur in the hunting ground

  39. فَإِذا صَوَّتَ الصَدى أَو دَعا الأَخ

    بَلُ طارَت كَالخاضِبِ المَذعورِ

    When echoes sound or camels bray

    They take wing like a panicked fugitive

  40. ظَلَّ صَدعَ النَهارِ في الآلِ والأَع

    بَلِ يَجتازُهُ وَفي الصُعرورِ

    The crack of day remains among summits and oxen

    Crossing it, and among split rocks

  41. ثُمَّ شامَ الفِراخَ فَاِرتَدَّ فَارمَد

    دَ فَشَقَّ الغَميرَ بَعدَ الغَميرِ

    Then it feels out the chicks—so it turned back,

    Raging, cleaving mirage after mirage

  42. ذا عِفاءٍ يَفري الفَرِيَّ وَتَحدو

    هُ النُعامى مُزوَرَّةً عَن سَفيرِ

    With swiftness making the prey flee

    While the ostriches, falsely crying, spur it on

  43. لا بَراتي مِنَ الجَدالَةِ إِلّا

    دونَ ما تَعتَدي مِن التَشميرِ

    I have no she-camels but those

    Who lag behind the vanguard

  44. بَدرُ لَيلٍ يَخافُ سِندَأوُهُ الغي

    لَ وَعَيناً مِن صَيدَنِيٍّ مُغيرِ

    A waning moon fearing its setting in darkness

    And a Najd eye of changeable color

  45. وَحَبِيٍّ مِثلِ الكُراعِ بَدا في ال

    أُفُقِ بَلٍّ كَالفَيلَقِ الجُمهورِ

    A loved one appeared on the horizon like a banner

    Of many ranks or a surging sea

  46. أَعقَبَتهُ القَبولُ رَوقاً مِنَ الأَر

    نَبِ حَتّى حَبا حُبُوَّ الأَميرِ

    Good fortune followed it charmingly

    Until it was loved like a prince

  47. يَتَلَظّى كَالشَمعِ مِن شُرَفِ المَج

    دَلِ أَو كَالنيرانِ أَعلى ثَبيرِ

    It burns like a candle or higher fires

    I see its glow neither fall nor fade

  48. لا أَرى ضَوءَهُ يَبوخُ وَلا يَخ

    مَدُ إِلّا عَن عامِلٍ مُستَطيرِ

    But from one urging it on constantly

    A lion—when it growled and bared its teeth

  49. أَسَدِيٌّ إِذا تَرَجَّفَ وَاِنشَق

    قَ سَناهُ أَكَلَّ طَرقَ البَصيرِ

    It devoured the sight of the seers

    And when it was hidden, I say of insight

  50. وَإِذا ما خَفي أَقولُ عَلى البَص

    رَةِ إِنّي بِها كَريبُ الضَميرِ

    I am intimate with it, aware of its conscience

    I turned from it to the hawks of Bani ‘Amr

  51. زُلتُ عَنها إِلى صُقورِ بَني عَم

    روٍ وَلاقى آسادَ تِلكَ الصُقورِ

    And it met those hawks halfway

    The sky flashed among them

  52. بَرَقَت فيهُمُ السَماءُ فَكَلَّف

    تُ صِحابي وَاللَيلُ مُلقي السُتورِ

    And the night throwing over its veils taxed my friends

    An enemy raining destruction—though it runs

  53. عارِضٌ يُمطِرُ السَبيلَ وَإِن كا

    نَ دُواراً فيِ الحادِثِ القَمطَريرِ

    In circles during calamity’s onslaughts—

    It boils war with wars, ending the day

  54. يَسلُقُ الحَربَ بِالحُروبِ وَيُمسي

    عَصَراً في عُصارَةِ المُستَديرِ

    In the essence of crisis

    When delegations come to him

  55. فَإِذا حَلَّتِ الوُفودُ إِلَيهِ

    بَشَّرَت ريحُهُ بِيَومٍ مَطيرِ

    Its wind heralds a rainy day

    Its example is from a great father and forefathers

  56. سُنَّهٌ مِن أَبٍ كَبيرٍ وَآبا

    ءٍ تَوالَوا عَلى اِحتِمالِ الكَبيرِ

    Who succeeded each other in bearing the great burden

    The all-encompassing protectors—if war stands

  57. الكُفاةُ الحُماةُ إِن قامَتِ الحَر

    بُ حَبانا وَعَزَّ ما في الصُدورِ

    They heap favors upon us and increase what is in our breasts

    Orators on pulpits and steeds

  58. خُطَباءٌ عَلى المَنابِرِ فُرسا

    نٌ إِذا أُعلِموا لِيَومٍ نَكيرٍ

    When warned of an awesome day

    They have help when the thicket is aflame

  59. عِندَهُم نَجدَةٌ إِذا حَمِسَ الرَو

    عُ وَفيهُم مَهابَةٌ لِلفُجورِ

    And they have awe of sin

    Galloping to give freely from surplus

  60. وَسِراعٌ إِلى الأَتاوِيّ بِالعُر

    فِ وَلا يَمحَقونَ سَهمَ الفَقيرِ

    They do not brush aside the poor man’s arrow

    They descended from the height of glory

  61. نَزَلوا بِاليَفاعِ مِن ذِروَةِ المَج

    دِ بِحِلمٍ وَنائِلٍ وَنَكيرِ

    With forbearance, attainment, and dignity

    Loyal to what they avowed to themselves

  62. وَوَفاءٍ بِما أَقَرّوا عَلى الأَن

    فُسِ وَأياً في العِسرِ وَالتَيسيرِ

    Whether times were easy or difficult

    Gray hairs rose to grandest deeds and glory

  63. نَهَضَ الشيبُ بِالحَمالَةِ وَالمَج

    دِ بِرَأيٍ عالٍ وَأَيدٍ بُحورِ

    With lofty opinion and oceans of insight

    Brave when war scorned them

  64. وَفُتُوٌّ إِذا اِستَخَفَّتهُمُ الحَر

    بُ لَقوها كَالأُسدِ أَو كَالنُمورِ

    They met it like lions or panthers

    Agile lords of the feast’s entertainment

  65. رُتَّقٌ لِلثَّأي مَراجيحُ في النَد

    وَةِ يَشفونَ غُلَّةَ المُستَجيرِ

    Who heal the anguish of the refugee

    They sported in wars until they were tamed

  66. لَعِبوا في الحُروبِ حَتّى اِستَكانَت

    ثُمَّ راحوا في المِسكِ أَو في العَبيرِ

    Then rested in musk or perfume

    All of them confirm the meeting and do not refuse

  67. كُلُّهُم يَصدُقُ اللِقاءَ وَلا يُل

    فى كَسَلمٍ في المَأزِقِ المُستَجيرِ

    Like a ladder for one is straits who seeks refuge

    A Muslim—war recoils from his face—

  68. مُسلِمِيٌّ تَنجابُ عَن وَجهِهِ الحَر

    بُ نَصيراً كَالهِبرِزِيِّ النَصيرِ

    An aide like al-Hibrizzy the aide

    And there came to me the distance of Salm’s travel

  69. وَأَتاني مَسيرُ سَلمٍ عَنِ النا

    سِ أَميراً فَقُلتُ خَيرُ أَميرِ

    About the people—I said, “the best of princes”

    He appointed stewards and a provider of plenty

  70. نَصَبَ المُقرَباتِ وَالمُسهِبَ الآ

    فِقَ حَتّى اِنطوينَ طَيَّ الجَريرِ

    Until those in need were satisfied

    Attacking the enemy at dawn

  71. بِغُدُوٍّ عَلى الأَعادي وَرَوحا

    تٍ لَقينَ الحَياتِ مِن تَقريرِ

    And relaxing with snakes after proving

    Every ring-necked snake is protected

  72. كُلُّ خَيفانَةٍ تُصانُ عَلى الأَق

    رَبِ صَونَ العَروسِ في الزَمهَريرِ

    Like an engaged girl in her boudoir

    Magnanimous in Syria like a staff for the guide

  73. سَمحَةٍ في الشَمالِ مِثلِ عَصا الذا

    ئِدِ أَو مِثلُها رَحاةُ السَجيرِ

    Or like its staff, the pliant wood of Al-Sajir

    Munif’s short spear wounded one with two spears

  74. وَمُنيفِ القَذالِ أَضلَعَ ذي ني

    رَينِ يَختالُ عادِياً في المَسيرِ

    Strutting smoothly on raids

    Like the humming of wasps when they buzz

  75. مِثلَ كَرِّ الصَناعِ يَهوي إِذا حَن

    نَ كَما حَنَّتِ الصَبا للِدَّبورِ

    As the Zephyr buzzed for hornets

    Then he uncovered himself before the Caliph

  76. ثَمَّ جَلّى عَنِ الخَليفَةِ بِالسَي

    فِ غَداةَ اِلتَقَت صَياصي الأُمورِ

    When the swords of crisis crossed

    He broke the well-equipped army. Chaos appeared,

  77. صَدَعَ العَسكَرَ المُنيفَ بَدا خَض

    رى بِضَربٍ أَتى عَلى المَغرورِ

    Striking the arrogant one with a blow

    So their ignorance raced them and war overtook

  78. فَاِرعوى جَهلُهُم وَأَدرَكَتِ الحَر

    بُ رِجالاً تَجَرَّدوا لِلظهورِ

    Men who stripped themselves for conflicts

    A generous one who sees blame as a snake—

  79. وَكَريمٌ يَرى المَلامَةَ كَالحَي

    يَةِ صَبَّحنَهُ مَذَرَّ الذُرورِ

    Dawn whitened him after the darkest gloom

    With much affection, humbleness,

  80. بِأَطيرٍ مِنَ المَوَدَّةِ دانٍ

    وَثَناءٍ كَالعَصبِ عَصبِ الحَريرِ

    And praise clinging like silk fabric to silk

    So he rose high, shone for glory

  81. فَاِنتَمى صاعِداً وَأَشرَقَ لِلمَج

    دِ وَجَلّى عَن صَوبِ غَيثٍ غَزيرِ

    And uncovered a downpour from a rain-giving cloud

    A lovely one vibrating for praise

  82. أَريَحِيٌّ إِلى المَحامِدِ يَهتَز

    زُ اِهتِزازَ المُهَنَّدِ المَشهورِ

    Shaking like the famed, ecstatic mystic

    Guarantor of smooth meetings if the winds

  83. ضامِنٌ لِلحُلولِ إِن هَبَّتِ الري

    حُ بَليلاً أَرزاقَهُم مِن عَقيرِ

    Blow their provisions from unfertile ground

    He does not wrangle over surplus nor give

  84. لا يُصابي عَلى الفُضولِ وَلا يُع

    طي اِفتِخاراً لا خَيرَ في الفِخّيرِ

    Boastfully—no good is in the spendthrift

    A master, a chief—and in rule there is

  85. سَيِّدٌ سُوقَةٌ وَفي المُلكِ فَيّا

    ضٌ يُحامي عَن عِرضِهِ بِالنَذورِ

    One who protects his honor with vows

    A heaven over the clan that only

  86. وَسَماءٌ عَلى العَشيرَةِ لايُق

    لِعُ إِلّا عَن زاهِرٍ مُستَنيرِ

    Darkens for one shining and luminous

    He buys praise with equipment and safety

  87. يَشتري الحَمدَ بِالعَتادِ وَبِالأَم

    نِ يَرى كَسبَهُ مِن التَوفيرِ

    Sees his earnings as thrift

    O son of the sword of Iraq, if none like you

  88. يا اِبنَ سَيفِ العِراقِ إِن لَم يُزَر مِث

    لُكَ مِنّا فَأَينَ بَيتُ المَزورِ

    From us has been visited, then where is the visit?

    Delegations crowded around you, and so

  89. كَثُرَت حَولَكَ الوفودُ وَقَد جِئ

    نا قَصيراً هَذا أَوانُ الصَيورِ

    We have come late—this is the time for images

    If you are a master, you are son of one who ruled,

  90. إِن تَكُن سَيِّداً فَأَنتَ اِبنُ مَن سا

    دَ تَوَلّى وَما لَهُ مِن نَظيرِ

    Assuming command, for he has no peer

    He was sheltering rain for the stricken

  91. كانَ غَيثَ الضَريكِ في حَجرَةِ البَأ

    سِ وَجاراً لِلحارِمِ المُستَجيرِ

    And neighbor to the desperate refugee

    How many did your father gather

  92. كَم تَلافى أَبوكَ مِن خائَفٍ جا

    ءَ طَريداً وَغارِمٍ وَأَسيرِ

    Who came miserable, destitute, captive!

    He grew feathers on his wings until

  93. أَنبَتَ الريشَ في جَناحَيهِ حَتّى

    عادَ وَحفا وَطارَ كُلَّ مَطيرِ

    He felt strong, guarded, flew—every downpour
