1. Ah, you two, give me pure wine to drink; I have wasted away.

    And had Hubba remained with us, I too would have remained.

  2. I see my sickness worsening because of Umm Malik;

    And had I one day tasted her saliva, I would have been cured.

  3. I spend the day as though I had drunk a serpent's venom,

    And obsessive thoughts haunt me when I lie down at night.

  4. So glory be to my Lord! No endurance remains after

    I have run, and passion has worn me out, so I have wasted away.

  5. I thirsted, but did not thirst for the coolness of a drink;

    Rather, I thirsted for the beloved's face.

  6. And she had promised us a favor, then broke her promise,

    And told us on the day of parting, 'I forgot.'

  7. Yet she did not give us even a sip of her saliva;

    And had she done so, passion would have died, and I would have been content.
