أَظُنُّ سَعيداً كائِناً لِصَديقِهِ
كَداحِسِ عَبسٍ أَو كَبَكرِ ثَمودِ
I think Sa'id is to his friend
like Dahis of 'Abs, or like the young camel of Thamud.
وَما اِبنُ زُرَيقٍ مُقصِرٌ دونَ ضَربَةٍ
عَلى أَنفِهِ مِن ضامِنٍ لِمَزيدِ
Nor will Ibn Zurayq desist until he takes a blow
to his nose from one who guarantees more.
أَمِن حَمَلٍ عِندَ اِبنِ نِهيا أَكَلتَهُ
مِنَ آلِ المُثَنّى أَو مِنَ آلِ يَزيدِ
Is it for a lamb you ate at Ibn Nihya's,
from the house of al-Muthanna or from the house of Yazid,
تَحوطُ اِبنَ نِهيا يا سَعيدُ كَأَنَّما
تَحوطُ اِمرَأً قَد ناكَ أُمَّ سَعيدِ
that you protect Ibn Nihya, O Sa'id, as though
protecting a man who has fucked Sa'id's mother?
