Let no poor man ever despair of wealth,
After what Ya'qub ibn Dawud attained.
He has become, after being on the brink of death
And after a fetter bound tight around both wrists,
A brother to al-Mahdi of all God's creatures,
Raised above the necks of mighty chiefs.
If indeed you are envied for the honor you have attained,
You certainly suffered for a time, envied by none.
O people, your caliphate is indeed lost!
Indeed, the caliph is Ya'qub ibn Dawud.
Your caliphate is lost, O people; so seek
God's caliph between the wineskin and the lute.
