Quench my thirst, O son of Sa'd,
Before the evening dew descends,
With a drink that takes away cares
And heals the troubled one.
Quench me, then sing to me,
For I see no star appear.
My eyes are burning with sorrow,
For one who tended to worries is burned.
Verily her mouth is more tempting to me
Than meadows and springs,
Than the honeycomb of bees
Dripping chilled and filtered.
The voice of a bird visiting friends distressed me,
For it twittered merrily.
My love for her
Left me sleepless.
She held me back in my youth
At the sanctuary of burning sands.
At times I hope for life,
At others, I see death as darkest.
My worries are prolonged
Troubles, accustomed and trained.
They left me no respite, by God,
At the resting places.
O daughter of goodness, you have reigned,
So sacrifice me, for I am to be sacrificed.
The intense love for you caused me
To bow down in humility.
Free me from passion
Or make me a promise from you.
Give us hope, so we may live,
And say to us “tomorrow”.
You are my care, along with my dear one,
Even when I depart alone.
How excellent are you, O love,
And the lute and the dew,
And talk of the eye and of intimacy
Curing through it depression.
And a mature wine
That leaves the old man seated.
That is a life which, if prolonged for me,
I would live eternally delighted.
