Oh say to Abda if you come to her,
Though kin may travel far apart.
I'll never be the one to visit you,
Nor game pursues the hunter's art.
When love's caprice assailed my heart,
I found its throbs increased each day.
If absence lessened one man's love,
I found my loving gained in sway.
My neighbor I may see or shun,
And visit her or stay beside.
You've passed the nights in leaving me,
While I them wakeful must abide.
I sip my wine throughout the night
Of each month as it dawns anew,
While rose and vine seem to suppose
Some garden lies between the two.
The wakeful, after eyes' repose,
Have music ere the red cock crows,
And she, to lonely one who grieves,
A glance that binds the wild gazelle's.
Such days have passed and never more
Shall life for me unchanged abide.
