وَطالَ عَلَيَّ اللَيلُ حَتّى كَأَنَّهُ
بِلَيلَينِ مَوصولٌ فَما يَتَزَحزَحُ
The night dragged on endlessly as if
It were two nights joined, unrelenting,
كَأَنَّ الدُجى زادَت وَما زادَتِ الدُجى
وَلَكِن أَطالَ اللَيلَ هَمٌّ مُبَرِّحُ
As if the darkness grew denser, not the dark itself,
But a cheerless anxiety made the night longer.
لَقَد هاجَ دَمعي نازِحٌ بِنٌزوحِهِ
وَنَومي إِذا ما نَوَّمَ الناسَ أَنزَحُ
Truly my tears surged forth insistently with their flow,
And my sleep, when others slept, withdrew.
