Safe from mishaps and accustomed passion,

Al-Khali slumbers, and I feel no slumber.

I answer one who asks how I fare,

Till I am sick of those who visit me.

My censurer has reproached me, though she has seen

That the dishevelled is a wanderer or gone.

For love of a singing girl who has enthralled my heart,

It has returned to its former ways.

Verily I fear my death will be because of love,

For it calls the young man to corruption.

You will see me concealing nothing of my desire,

And I forget, for my love, my religion and my kin.

The day you went and left, you stole my heart,

Leaving with me a body without a heart.

A tender liver is inclined toward you,

And a youthful spirit flows calmly to him.

Do not spurn him, O Ubayda, but go straight

To my soul which is yours, my places and my people.
