1. راحَت رَواحاً بَينَ كُنّادِ

    وَأَخلَفَت ظَنّي وَميعادي

    She went away between the sand dunes

    And broke my expectations and my promises

  2. وَبِتُّ مُشتاقاً إِلى وَجهِها

    أَلقى عَلَيهِ غُلَّةَ الصادي

    I spend the night longing for her face

    Bearing the cover of loss upon me

  3. فَقُلتُ لِلنَفسِ قِفي إِنَّها

    شيمَةُ ما في الوَعدِ ميعادِ

    So I said to myself, stop, she is

    Of the nature of the untrue promise

  4. ما كُلُّ برقٍ مُرشِدٌ ماؤُهُ

    وَلا صَديقٌ كُلُّ مُعتادِ

    Not every lightning flash has pouring rain

    Nor every friend is trustworthy

  5. كَم دونَها مِن مَنهَلٍ آجِنٍ

    وَمِن ذُرى طَودٍ وَأَعقادِ

    How many watering places below her are fertile

    And lofty sand dunes and twining vines

  6. وَمِن سَخاوِيٍّ بِها مُشرِفٍ

    لِلعَينِ مِن مَثنى وَأَفرادِ

    And generous palms rising above

    For the eye, paired and single

  7. فَعَزِّ نَفساً قَلبُها شاخِصٌ

    بِفَقدِ مَن لَيسَ بِمِفقادِ

    So cheer up a soul whose heart longs

    For one not lost and missed

  8. وَصاحِبٍ يُعطي وَيُبدي العُلى

    رَكّابُ أَهوالٍ وَأَعوادِ

    And a companion who gives and shows nobility

    Enduring fears and returning

  9. صَحِبتُهُ في المُلكِ أَو عودِهِ

    فَزادَ في عِدَّةِ حُسّادي

    I accompanied him in power or its loss

    And increased the number of my enviers

  10. يا طالِبَ الحاجاتِ لا تَعصِني

    وَاِسمَع فَإِنّي ناصِحٌ هادِ

    O you who seek needs, do not disobey me

    And listen, I am an advising guide

  11. دَع عَنكَ حَمّاداً وَخُلقانَهُ

    لا خَيرَ في خُلقانِ حَمّادِ

    Leave Hammad and his character

    No good is in the character of Hammad

  12. المُؤثِرُ الرَأسَ عَلى رَبِّهِ

    وَالجاعِلُ الخِنزيرَ في الزادِ

    One who prefers the head to his Lord

    And puts the pig among provisions

  13. طَرّادُ وِلدانٍ إِذا ما غَدا

    ما كُلُّ لوطِيٍّ بِطَرّادِ

    Chasing boys whenever he goes out

    Not every sodomite is a chaser

  14. بَرِئتُ مِن هَذا وَمِن دينِهِ

    يُصبِحُ لِلخِشفِ بِمِرصادِ

    I am quit of him and his religion

    He lays up at daybreak to ambush

  15. بِئسَ الشَوانِيُّ لَهُ مَنصِبٌ

    في آلِ نِهيا غَيرُ مُرتادِ

    Miserable is the officer, he has a position

    Among the family of Nuhayy, not often visited

  16. لا يَشرَبُ الخَمرَ وَلَكِنَّهُ

    يَأكُلُها أَكلَ اِمرِئٍ عادِ

    He does not drink wine, but

    He eats it, eating like Imr'e Al-Qais

  17. سُمّيتَ عَبدَ الرَأسِ مِن حُبِّهِ

    قَد عَلِمَ الحاضِرُ وَالبادي

    You were named slave of the head for its love

    The present and the far know

  18. سَمّاكَ حَمّاداً أَبٌ كاذِبٌ

    ما أَنتَ لِلَّهِ بِحَمّادِ

    A lying father named you Hammad

    You are not Hammad for God

  19. أَبَعدَ خَمسينَ تَكَمَّلتَها

    تَبكي عَلى اِستٍ المُسمِرِ العادي

    After fifty which you completed

    You cry over the peg of Is, the usual

  20. عَرَّدتَ عَن قَرمِ بَني هاشِمٍ

    وَالمَوتُ يَحدوكَ بِهِ الحادي

    You have turned away from the shame of the Hashimites

    And death urges you on towards it

  21. لَولا تَنَحّيكَ وَفى نَذرَهُ

    فيكَ فَأَصبَحتَ مَعَ الزادِ

    Were it not for your turning aside and fulfilling

    His vow in you, you would be among provisions

  22. ما أَنتَ بِالزاني وَلَكِنَّما

    وَرِثتَ عَن حَشٍّ وَوَلّادِ

    You are not an adulterer, but

    You have inherited from a wandering seducer

  23. لَو كُنتَ مِمَّن يَتَّقي سَوأَةً

    أَعوَلتَ مِن سُخطي وَإِبعادي

    If you were of those who fear dishonor

    You would refrain from my anger and rejection

  24. تَخدُمُ أَقواماً وَخَلَّيتَني

    وَقَد تَراني حَيَّةَ الوادي

    You serve a people and left me

    When you see me as the snake of the valley
