1. ريقُ سُعدى يا اِبنَ الدُجَيلِ الشِفاءُ

    فَاِسقِنيهِ لِكُلِّ داءٍ دَواءُ

    The saliva of Sa’da is a cure,

    O son of Dujail, so give me a drink of it for every malady.

  2. نامَ عَنّي صَحبي وَلا أَعرِفُ النَو

    مَ بِعَيني قَذىً وَبِالقَلبِ داءُ

    My companions fell asleep while I know not sleep.

    There is a mote in my eye and sickness in my heart.

  3. وَيَقولُ الوُشاةُ أَحبَبتَ سُعدى

    صَدَقوا وَالجَليلِ حُبّي عَياءُ

    The slanderers say “You loved Sa’da,”

    They spoke truly. My love for the sublime one was barefaced.

  4. لا أَراني أَعيشُ قَد ظَعَنَ الحِ

    بُ وَحَفَّت بُيوتِيَ الأَعداءُ

    I cannot imagine myself living now that love

    Has weakened and the dwellings of my enemies have closed in around me.

  5. ذَهَبَ الناصِحُ الشَفيقُ وَأَمسى

    جارَ بَيتي البَغيضُ هَذا البَلاءُ

    The kind, caring adviser is gone,

    And this affliction, my hateful neighbor, dwells near my house.

  6. جاوَرَتنا كَالماءِ حيناً فَلَمّا

    فارَقَت لَم يَكُن لِحَرّانَ ماءُ

    She dwelled near us like water for a time, but when

    She left, the well of Harran ran dry.

  7. فَصِلِ اللَيلَ بِالنَهارِ إِلى أَح

    وَرَ فيهِ تَعَرُّضٌ وَاِلتِواءُ

    Join night to day endlessly

    With twists and indirect passages between them.

  8. وَاِستَرِح بِالحَبيبِ فيما تُلاقي

    كُلُّ شَيءٍ سِوى الحَبيبِ عَناءُ

    Find peace with the beloved whom you meet while

    Everything besides the beloved is affliction.

  9. وَيَقولُ الطَبيبُ في رَحمَةِ اللَ

    هِ غَناءٌ وَلَيسَ عِندي غَناءُ

    The doctor says “There is solace in God’s mercy”

    But I have no solace.

  10. أَمَمٌ ماسَلِمتِ فَقدُ فَقيدٍ

    أَيُّ نَفسٍ صَفا لَها ماتَشاءُ

    An appointed term whose outcome I know not,

    What soul has attained its desire?

  11. لَيسَ يَبلى بِالصَبرِ عَنهُ وَفي طو

    لِ زَمانٍ يَأتي عَلَيكَ عَزاءُ

    Patience does not wear away longing for her, and after

    Many days consolation will come to you.

  12. نَصَبُ الحادِثاتِ غَيرُ سَليمٍ

    كُلُّ كَأسٍ لَهُ بِها أَقذاءُ

    The blows of fate spare no one.

    Every cup has bitterness in it.
