1. Ah, Tayb, you have grown fragrant!

    And perfume did not make you fragrant,

  2. but rather a breath from you,

    when closeness enfolds you.

  3. And a cool, sweet mouth,

    within which wonders flowed;

  4. and a face resembling the full moon,

    with a crown bound upon it;

  5. and an eye that enchants the eye,

    with no sin in its enchantment;

  6. and thick hair adorning the two sides of your back,

    itself adorned with plaits;

  7. and a neck resembling pearls,

    long and slender as a white gazelle's neck;

  8. and a chest between two rounded caskets,

    glowing, it dazzles the eye.

  9. Upon it are green jewels,

    and rubies set in place.

  10. And something between two thighs,

    like an overturned drinking bowl.

  11. And love for you has spread,

    and a verse is ascribed to you.

  12. If only your face favored us,

    and wine—the antidote—and perfume,

  13. we would sustain you, and live through

    you; life is indeed beloved.

  14. It decreed that I obey love,

    and love's adversary is vanquished.

  15. You stir the heart with it,

    as slender boughs swayed.

  16. And a promise like the bees' harvest,

    yet that is marred.

  17. So my eye pours out tears,

    and my heart is distressed because of you.

  18. And if you wished, we would take our pleasure,

    even if Ya'qub chanted God's praises.
