Out of love for her, I wish to be met
Out of my love for her I wish that
By a bearer of death-tidings from the direction of her town, announcing her death,
A passing breeze from her land would come to me
So I might say, "A parting with no reunion,"
So that I may say parting has no meeting
And my soul would harbor despair, then forget her.
And my soul harbors despair and then finds solace in it
Yet if she died, her death would appall me, and I would say to her:
And if she dies it would terrify me and I would say to her
"Woe to death! If only time had kept her alive!"
What a pity death is! If only fate had let her live
