1. Malik came in the morning with his reproaches

    Against me, though he had not been on my mind that night.

  2. He disparaged a tender maiden, slender-waisted,

    One of the fair-eyed maidens, favored and lofty.

  3. So I said, "Leave off blaming me for loving her;

    For before you, I wore out my reproachers."

  4. And indeed I conceal her secret from them,

    On the morning the carefree woman says to her:

  5. "ʿUbayda, why are you stripped of your finery,

    When you once wore a short tunic and jewels?"

  6. She said apprehensively, "Indeed, I

    Have pledged my anklet to al-Muraʿʿath

  7. For a day's meeting, which I shall honor,

    Even if the people clamor around me."
