Refresh us, O breezes of the dawn,
And carry to old age the breaths of youth.
Spread from the one we yearn for, happiness,
Over our ribs from between the sand dunes.
And when you return with the secrets of love,
Mix for us when visiting the winds of sorrow.
Then waft to us gently a musky scent,
And spread sweet perfume over us.
How much we have spread in meanings and news,
And folded for approaching a carpet.
And we waited for the rising of dawn for them,
So we could read what its years have written.
And we narrated in the nights their tales,
We haven’t narrated any tale but theirs.
And we were engrossed with them over others,
We haven’t befriended any but the antelopes.
Alas, their abandonment causes me sorrow,
How much it has branded a heart and mind!
And the laments over their love,
Have taught the ungrateful ones manners.
What excuse do I have with a heart among them,
That mischievous hands have toyed with!
My heart is melting from loving them,
Only those who have tasted love truly know.
Their cupbearer said: “Take the wine cup and die!
They have sprinkled perfume over the dear soil.”
From being away from their sanctuary I am ill,
With war, and more war, and more war!
If I were to get a glimpse of their faces,
I would fill the universe with delight for me.
I am absent from them though before my eyes,
I have become a wonder among them.
O God grant me happiness in my heart for them,
You have torn apart, O happiness, the veils!
And You have taken injustice as a residence,
And we have willingly lost patience.
Love has fluttered upon our minds,
So we followed it, a reason.
Our stratagems in loving them were foiled,
That is how God, the Exalted, has decreed.
How can I forget among the riders of passion,
The day they called me: “O stranger of strangers!”
They affirmed for me my strangeness in their love,
Indeed, in this there is news from the unseen!
