ما عَرَفْتُ الوَلِيَّ إِلاَّ بدِلْقٍ

يا مُسَيْكينُ أَنْتَ عبدُ الدُّلُوقِ

I knew not the saint but by his gentleness,

O you poor one, you're a slave to arrogance,

وظنَنْتَ الأَسْرارَ بالثَّوبِ قامَتْ

بينَ مصقولِ ذَيْلِها والزُّيوقِ

You thought the mysteries were in clothes,

Rising between the polished tail and ornament.

حَدِّقْ العينَ بالدِّرايَةِ وانظُرْ

شارِقاتِ القُلُوبِ قبلَ الخُروقِ

Stare with insight and look,

At the enlightened hearts before the rising.

قد طلَبْتَ العُقودَ في تِلَعِ البَ

رِّ وأَنَّ العُقودُ في الصُّنْدوقِ

You sought knots in the sheep pen,

Yet the knots are in the box.

ورَطيبُ النَّخيلِ في الشَّرقِ يا من

راحَ يرجو الْتِقاطَهُ بفَرُوق

The scent of palm trees in the east, O one

Who went hoping to pick it up in the morn.

أَنْتَ ضمنَ الحَضيضِ تزعُمُ وَهْماً

وشُؤُنُ الوَلِيِّ في العيُّوق

You're down in the low thinking falsely,

Yet the saint's affairs are in loftiness.

أَنْتَ مُستغْرِبٌ شُروقَ التَّجلِّي

لمُحِبٍّ جَهِلْتَ مَعنى الشُّرُوق

You're a stranger to the dawning of revelation,

To a lover you're ignorant of the meaning of dawn.

يا مُسَيْكِينُ هل عَلِمْتَ يَقيناً

ما طَواهُ الخَلاَّقُ في المَخلوُق

O poor one, did you know with certainty,

What the Creator concealed in the creation?

ترقُبُ السِّرَّ في سَمينٍ عَريضٍ

ربّ قولٍ منظَّمٍ مَنْسُوق

You await the secret in a fat, broad,

Beautiful utterance, well-arranged.

يا قليلَ الجِحا تَرى البرقَ في اللَّيْ

لِ فخذْ حُكمَ سانِحاتِ البُرُوق

O little smart one, you see lightning in the night,

So take the ruling of the flashing lights.

إنَّ ربِّي يستَوْدِعُ السِّرَّ من شَا

ءَ برمزِ المجْموعِ والمَفْرُوق

My Lord hides the secret in whom He will,

By the symbol of the joined and separate.

كم سَبوقٍ في أوَّلِ الرَّكْبِ حالَ ال

عَوْدِ يُدعى بالآخِرِ المَسْبُوق

How many raced ahead at first,

Then called last when returning.

نحنُ من بَيتِنا عَرَفْنا رِجالاً

خَدَموا اللهَ في سَواءِ الطَّريق

We from our house knew men,

Who served God on the common path.

تَرَكوا الكائِناتِ ترْكَ لَبيبٍ

ذي فُؤادٍ مُوَلَّعٍ مَحرُوق

They left creation like a reasonable one,

With a burning, passionate heart.

عُصبَةُ السَّيِّدِ الرِّفاعِي

شيخِ أَهلِ الطَّريقِ والتَّحقيق

The group of the eminent master,

Sheikh of the path and verification.

الحَكيمِ الكَريمِ ذي الهِمَّةِ العَلْ

ياءِ شيخِ المَفْهومِ والمَنْطُوق

The wise, generous one with high ambition,

Sheikh of the understood and spoken.

أَودَعَ الكتمَ آلَهُ للمَعاني

فَتَخَافَوْا عن جارِهِمْ والرَّفيق

He entrusted concealment to his people,

So they were wary of their neighbor and friend.

خَلِّنا يا صُوَيْحِبي من أُناسٍ

زَعَموا المسكَ عينَ جِسمِ الحُقوق

Free us, my friend, from people

Who claimed musk was the essence of rights.

هاكَ من بيتِنا أَبا البَرَكاتِ ال

فَحْلِ شيخَ الهُدى الكَريمِ العُرُوق

The champion, noble sheikh of loftiness.

To see a silent master, great,

لتَرى سيِّداً كَتوماً عَظيماً

ذا شُؤُنٍ قامَتْ بقلبِ مَشُوق

With affairs that rose from a passionate heart.

How he stayed up at night and awakened

كم أقامَ العَجاجَ ليلاً وحَيَّى

راكِباً في الطَّريقِ بيضَ الأَنُوق

Riding the path on white she-camels.

Shed a tear on the cheeks constantly,

ذرَّ دمعاً على الخُدودِ وُلوهاً

كوُلُوهِ العُشَّاقِ للمَعْشُوق

Like the constant yearning of lovers for the beloved.

Outwardly peaceful, and within the matter, burning,

ساكِنٌ ظاهِراً وفي باطِنِ الأَمْ

رِ وَلوعٌ أَخو فُؤادٍ خَفُوق

A brother to a tender, sensitive heart.

Negligent, he eats food, and if he drinks water,

ذاهِلاً يأكُلُ الطَّعامَ وإنْ ما

يشرَبِ الماءَ فهو شُربُ الغَريق

It’s the drinking of the drowning.

Never a day I clothed him

ما أُحَيْلى يوماً نَشَرْتُ عليهِ

كِسوَةَ الأَمنِ في المَقامِ الأَنيق

With the garment of security in the graceful abode.

This was about the matter of the most noble guide,

كانَ هذا عن أَمرِ أَشرفِ هادٍ

بحُضورِ الصِّدِّيقِ والفارُوق

In the presence of the truthful and the distinguisher.

Clarify for me, my friends, about a friend

عَلِّلوني يا رفْقَتي عن رَفيقٍ

أَنا فارَقْتُهُ وشَطَّ فَريقي

I parted with, and my troop marched on.

Will the nights gather friends

يا تُرى تجمَعُ اللَّيالي صِحاباً

عاهَدونا على قَديمِ الحُقُوق

Who pledged to us the old rights?

It's a secret not divulged as long as

هو سِرٌّ لم يُفْشَ ما دامَتِ الأَرْ

ضُ ومَرَّتْ ليالي التَّشْريق

The earth remains and the feast nights pass.

The hearts concealed it from every market,

قد طوَتْهُ القُلُوبُ عن كلِّ سوقٍ

ليسَ سِرُّ القُلُوبِ سِرَّ السُّوق

The secret of hearts isn't the secret of markets.

Convey my fragrant greetings, O breeze,

بلِّغي يا نَسيمُ منِّي سَلامي

عَبْهَرِيًّا إلى الخَليلِ الصَّدُوق

To the sincere, trusted friend.

I have led my heart to the beloved,

أَنا قدْ سُقْتُ للأَحِبَّةِ قلبي

إنْ رأَى العاشِقونَ سَوْقَ النُّوق

If the lovers see the camel market.
