هبت تغمغم : سوف نفترق
روح على شفتيك تخترق
She rose murmuring: We shall part,
A soul upon your lips piercing through.
صوت كأن ضرام صاعقة
ينداح فيه ... وقلبي الأفق
A voice like the blaze of a thunderbolt
Expanding within... and my heart is the horizon.
ضاق الفضاء وغام في بصري
ضوء النجوم وحطم الألق
Space narrowed, and in my sight dimmed
The light of stars, and the radiance shattered.
فعلى جفوني الشاحبات وفي
دمعي شظايا منه أو مزق
So upon my pale eyelids and within
My tears are fragments of it, or shreds.
فيم الفراق ؟ أليس يجمعنا
حب نظل عليه نعتنق ؟
Why the parting? Does there not unite us
A love we continue to embrace?
حب ترقرق في الوعود سنا
منه ورف على الخطى عبق
A love whose light shimmered in promises,
And from it, a fragrance fluttered upon our steps.
أختاه، صمتك ملؤه الريب ؟
فيما الفراق ؟ أما له سبب ؟
My dear, is your silence filled with doubt?
Why the parting? Is there no cause for it?
الحزن في عينيك مرتجف
واليأس في شفتيك يضطرب
Sadness in your eyes is trembling,
And despair upon your lips is stirred.
ويداك باردتان : مثل غدي
وعلى جبينك خاطر شجب
Your hands are cold: like my tomorrow,
And upon your brow is a sorrowful thought.
ما زال سرك لا تجنحه
آه مأججة : ولا يثب
Your secret remains un-winged by
A burning sigh: nor does it leap forth,
حتى ضجرت به وأسأمه
طول الثواء وآده التعب
Until I grew weary of it, and it was sickened
By the length of waiting, and fatigue weighed it down.
إني أخاف عليك وأختلجت
شفة إلى القبلات تلتهب
"I fear for you," and there quivered
A lip, burning for kisses.
ثم إنثنيت مهيضة الجلد
تتنهدين وتعصرين يدي
Then you turned away, broken in spirit,
Sighing and squeezing my hand,
وترددين وأنت ذاهلة
إني أخاف عليك حزن غد
And repeating while you were distraught:
"I fear for you the sorrow of tomorrow."
فتكاد نتتثرالنجوم أسى
في جوهن كذائب البرد
The stars almost scatter in sorrow
In their skies like melting hail.
لا تتركي لا تتركي لغدي
تعكير يومي ما يكون غدي
Do not leave, do not leave for my tomorrow
The troubling of my day, whatever my tomorrow may be.
وإذا ابتسمت اليوم من فرح
فلتعبسن ملامح الأبد
And if I smile today out of joy,
Let the features of eternity frown.
ما كان عمري قبل موعدنا
إلا السنين تدب في جسد
My life was not, before our meeting,
But years crawling within a body.
أختاه لذّ على الهوى ألمي
فاستمتعي بهواك وابتسمي
My dear, my pain has become sweet in love,
So enjoy your passion and smile.
هاتي اللهيب فلست أرهبه
ما كان حبك أول الحمم
Bring the flame, for I do not dread it;
Your love was not the first of fires.
ما زلت محترقا تلقفني
نار من الأوهام كالظلم
I remain burning, snatched up by
A fire of illusions like the darkness.
سوداء لا نور يضيء بها
جذلان يرقص عاري الفدم
Pitch black, no light shines within it,
Dancing gleefully, naked and silent.
هاتي لهيبك إن فيه سناً
يهدي خطاي ولو إلى العدم
Bring your flame, for within it is a light
That guides my steps, even if to the void.
