I loved her, mocking like visions,

    Vague and mysterious like doubts,

Mad, for beauty's charm is never complete

Unless it holds a touch of madness.

Joyful and laughing like the morning breeze,

    Gloomy and dark like death.

Despair rests in her eyelids, alongside desires,

And laughter is in her melodies, alongside moans.

The lightness of days plays upon her lips,

Yet in her eyes lies the solemnity of years.

    Dawn has torn through, undeterred

By love's intercession or the whispers of charm,

    A sweet, transparent veil

Over her dark lips, woven from the visions of dreamers.

She stirs the doubts of passion within my heart,

Stinging doubts, yet then she demands certainty.

Alas! My heart has now become a disbeliever,

Though it was once the foremost of her believers.

    O image masterfully formed

At the break of dawn, by the god of arts.

And a melody, from whose very tunes

Arise the whispers of nights and the trembling of branches.

    And a fragrant, divine breeze,

Dewy, with which He greeted the wretched.

And a flower whose beauty I fear for,

From a passing thought and the whispers of eyes.

Do not deceive me, for I am fully aware

Of what you reveal and what you conceal.

I see upon your cheeks, among what I see,

In a thousand hues, the kisses of lovers:

    From a bitter, treacherous kiss,

To a gentle kiss upon the forehead,

And a red kiss, blazing like hellfire,

And a white kiss, pure as certainty.

You refuse everything but to erase their traces,

Yet they, O my Layla, cannot be erased.

Do not deny your love for me, for I

Call upon the basil and jasmine to testify,

And the river, when its waves watched us

While I felt no shame before them, nor were you shy,

And the green thicket, when it caught sight

Of the yielding of your delicious, guarded beauty,

And a sigh that I unleashed to the darkness,

    So the fragrance of the moan perfumed the night;

Bleeding and painful, its melodies were played

By the right hand of the accursed outcast.

I will pour out a tear, holding sorrow,

And poetry, and this mournful, sorrowful love,

Perhaps it will intercede for me with her,

This weeping passion and this yearning.

    O image masterfully formed

At the break of dawn, by the god of arts.
