Fill the cup to the brim with tears and nectar,
For some sorrows deserve that we never sober.
The ember surrendered to me and lived within my heart,
A generous flame, sweet and elegant.
O my Damascus, O God's kiss to the world,
And its purified, aged wine.
I fill the cup with your love so my soul may be quenched
By your passion, not merely to taste it.
Tear it apart; it will flood you with fragrance and light,
So do not weary of the perfumes or the tearing.
Dawn gathered my memories as spilled blood,
Overwhelming glory, and a solemn pact.
Dawn gathered my memories, and gathered nothing
But daisies and anemones.
My pride is above the stars, and were it not for it,
I would not have been worthy of the stars.
My poetry is exalted—I guard it with my soul from all
Disgrace—for poetry, like honor, must be guarded.
Out of pride, I never complained of the enemy, but
I complained of the trusted, innocent friend.
And a brother to whom I served pure affection,
Yet he served me affection watered down.
My nature is love and tenderness; I know
No path to glory other than my love.
And my treasures—unguarded by Jinn—
Call out to the deprived and the wealthy alike.
My patience and forgiveness never wearied of the foe,
And I would ransom the friend with my own eyes.
I desire nothing of man but that he be merciful
Despite differing passions, and that he be compassionate.
I have graves wherein I buried my youth,
My morning draught of hopes, and my evening drink.
O graves of my peers: every brother
Embraces his brother within the soil.
These graves have encompassed my heart;
How can they complain of confinement when they are in the heavens?
How could sweet basil and longing not grow there,
When my heart has been spilled upon their soil?
The specter bathes in the tears of my eyes,
Which bend in kindness so he does not drown.
The wound descends from my heart upon love,
Meeting with pampering and thrill.
O Beauty Mark of Conquest, your brave Knight has slept,
Yet the duty of loyalty demands he awake.
His loved ones raced ahead of him to death,
So fate had mercy on the illustrious one left behind.
Yes, you have returned to Al-Aqiq, but
Family and peers have long departed Al-Aqiq.
I am like a bird enveloped by a thousand deserts,
Broken-winged, a torn remnant.
My grove has died, and my roses have withered;
I care for neither haste nor delay.
My exile has grown weary of my soul's alienation,
And I have tired of wandering west and east.
My exile, my exile, whether far or near;
I see myself driven into its darkness.
I swerved west and east, roaming far,
Yet I never escaped its aimed arrow.
Knight of Glory, the maidens of glory never rejoiced
But that you rose in chivalry, the first to lead.
He possesses the witty jest that dispenses
With debate and silences the logician.
And eloquence you would mistake for brocade,
Diverse scents, and strung pearls.
Within it lies the depth of seas teeming with pearls,
And the luxurious strains of music.
And a conscience so excessive in sensitivity
That it accounts for even the hidden and minute.
A scholar who pours sweetness into knowledge,
That you might inhale crushed ambergris.
O eagle who stormed the sun, until
He grew weary of the suns' glory and the soaring.
It is only right that two burdens—years and glory—
Should curb his stride and hinder him.
The eagle grows old, and the path becomes stumbling;
Memories of youth have crowded the way.
The captive eagle drank deep of them, and they restored him
To the world of suns, free and unbound.
They flooded his heart with nostalgia and longing,
And his right hand with pearls and agate.
The world of memories, embellished by the Creator
To comfort and pamper the created.
It is of God's generosity, whatever we desire:
Pure nectar and crushed musk.
Time intervened between me and meeting you,
Burdening me with a load I was able to bear.
It landed me amidst its calamities' divides,
May the perfume of heaven greet the parting.
Lebanon narrowed around me, though it was once vast;
It oozed malice, though it was once a companion.
What ails Lebanon? I went to water it with my love,
Yet it gave me bitterness and ingratitude to drink.
I exalted it with the pearls of my verses,
And adorned its neck with a collar of praise.
I planted stars in the night of Lebanon,
So the darkness fluttered, dewy and gleaming.
The "Brunette of Lebanon" beguiled me with perfumes,
And a slender, graceful form.
And beauty whose adornment God made supreme,
Refining it twice and thrice over.
And chastity that repelled the lips, leaving
The wine and the gazing only for the eyes.
The heart of darkness went mad for her lush lashes,
Enriching an eyelid and darkening the eye's corner.
They wished Lebanon to be a lowly foothill,
While we wished it towering and esteemed.
I praised the crisis in Lebanon when
It revealed to me the truth and the fabrication.
If we reproached Egypt out of affection,
It is because a friend may reproach a friend.
She gave us her Pharaoh, and we gave her,
In times of hardship, Joseph the Truthful.
How do slaves buy Kafur with money,
When Kafur himself was but a bondservant?
The Cedars of Lebanon shall never be goods
For Kafur, nor a marketplace for slaves.
O graves in Damascus, how many graves
Have been cast by exile to a distant place.
Desolate, save for the whistling of the Jinn
Shaking the darkness, and the croaking of ravens.
Wandering like light; my yearnings flew towards them,
Yet they could not reach them.
Glory has exiled us, both in graves and in life,
And wreaked havoc, scattering our union.
The exile of graves is one of Death's wiles,
To conceal its treasures and precious bonds.
You hear the wind, when it listens, carrying nostalgia
From my heart upon the soil, and a sob.
What ails my people? Death has claimed one group,
And ingratitude has claimed another.
The treasure was wronged by its owners, so it wished
To be squandered or stolen away.
They left me, perfumed with victory,
And left behind for me sorrow and sobbing.
Their faces parched me when they vanished,
So I sought memory as wine and moisture.
Its acquaintance with perfume is ancient;
It grew accustomed to the brow of the noble, virtuous one.
O peers of the conquests, we give drink to our deaths,
While passion feeds us turbidity.
Between us lies the bond of pride and an Umayyad glory
That rivals the highest stars.
And a struggle like a storm that shook the world
With roaring thunder and lightning bolts.
And chivalries like innocent maidens of the countryside:
Beautiful, knowing no artifice.
And decades of years we strung together
As prisons, pride, and hardship.
We were the earthquake storming through the East,
Shaking the nations until they awoke.
From visions, we forged the reality of truth,
And from the depth of darkness, a gleam.
We charge into the mysterious, towering heights of glory,
And refuse the paved, beaten path.
We are the fragrance of prisons, the fragrance of death;
We bear the deep wound with calm assurance.
We are like the sun: its wound set the world aglow
In illuminated sunset and sunrise.
We, Damascus, the conquests, and the sorrows
Are a world adorned to please.
Before us, the East knew not the intoxication of Truth,
Nor its wine, nor the purifier.
We are a passion for the Ghouta, fashioned by God
That the beloved might be deified.
We are a melody in the cup; we are, within the melody,
A wine that dances in applause.
Wine of light, wine of vengeance and faith;
Sweet when cool, and sweet when burning.
Truth knows the value of the unique jewel,
Valuing both the new and the ancient.
The free man excuses when resolve is true,
Even if success was missed.
O my Chief, for forty years we crowded them
With bitter defiance and furious might.
You raised me on patience and honor,
Sharp as the flashing sword.
The forum of Damascus and the ministry brought us together,
Rooted nobility fulfilling rooted love.
And cares that resembled aspirations
In beauty, ecstasy, and loftiness.
Luxurious, they grew within our hearts,
Pure in character and in vein.
Calamity reveals in you a noble heart,
Chaste eloquence, and a cheerful face.
Who will regale the assembly after you with purified honey?
And who will mend the breaches?
Your lofty speech thundered in the assembly,
When mouths were dry and throats unquenched.
Life denied you with age and sickness,
So prepare to divorce the one who loathes you.
Death brought from your peers a longing
That hastens steps, and a gentle reproach.
And a missive of love they composed,
Mastering eloquence and adornment.
And visions that adorned themselves for your slumbering lids,
That they might please and be worthy.
The grave has hidden a towering peak of glory,
Rugged, crowding the distant stars.
Hashim meets you in the hills of Eden;
The longing one receives the longed-for.
Greet Sa'ad for me, and kiss a face
Like the morning sun, dazzling and esteemed.
And Abu As'ad—may my tears water him—
And Sulayman, and the truthful Nadim.
And pour for Qadri, Adil, and Jamil
The nectar of my nostalgia and sweet love.
And complain of my grief to Mazhar and Najib;
Fate has startled your brother, so awake.
I have claims upon those precious graves,
And the grave of the noble fulfills all claims.
