1. ما للمنيّة أدعوها و تبتعد

    أمرّ من كل حتف بعض ما أجد

    What ails death, that I call to it and it pulls away?

    More bitter than any demise is some of what I feel.

  2. ظمآن أشهد ورد الموت عن كثب

    و الواردون أحبّائي و لا أرد

    Thirsty, I witness the watering hole of death from up close,

    and those arriving to drink are my loved ones, yet I do not go down.

  3. علّلت بالصبر أحزاني فيا لأسى

    بالجمر من نفحات الجمر يبترد

    I coaxed my sorrows with patience, but oh, what grief!

    It cools itself with embers from the very breath of embers.

  4. دعوت خدنيّ من دمع و من جلد

    فأسعف الدمع لكن خانني الجلد

    I called upon my two companions: tears and endurance;

    tears came to my aid, but endurance betrayed me.

  5. أصبحت أعزل و الهيجاء دائرة

    لا السيف ردّ الأذى عنّي و لا الزرد

    I have become unarmed while the battle rages;

    neither sword repels the harm from me, nor chainmail.

  6. أردّ رشق الظبى عن مهجتي بيد

    و تمسح الدمع من نزف الجراح يد

    With one hand I fend off the shower of blades from my soul,

    while the other hand wipes the tears from bleeding wounds.

  7. أبا جميل سلام الله لا كتب

    إليك تحمل أشواقي و لا برد

    O Abu Jamil, the peace of God be upon you—no letters

    carry my longings to you, nor do messengers.

  8. و العبقريّ غريب في مواطنه

    يدور حيث يدور الحقد و الحسد

    The man of genius is a stranger in his own homelands,

    revolving wherever hatred and envy revolve.

  9. و حاملين رسالات مقدّسة

    توحّدوا بالجهاد السمح و انفردوا

    And bearers of sacred messages,

    they united in noble struggle, yet stood alone.

  10. مشتّتين بعصف الرّيح و لا وطن

    يلمّ أشتات بلواهم و لا بلد

    Scattered by the storm's gale, with no homeland

    to gather the fragments of their affliction, and no country.

  11. معارك الحقّ من أجسادهم مزق

    على ثراها و من مرّانهم قصد

    The battles of truth hold torn pieces of their bodies

    upon its soil, and splintered shafts of their spears.

  12. و ربّ شاك فساد العصر يظلمه

    لم يفسد العصر لكن أهله فسدوا

    Many who complain of the era's corruption wrong it;

    the era has not corrupted, but rather its people have.

  13. أذاكر لي على صيداء هانئة

    من الزّمان عليها نعمة ودد

    Do you remember for me a blissful time in Sidon,

    upon which time bestowed grace and affection?

  14. يمشي بك المجد في أفياء وارفة

    من الأمانيّ لا تلوي بما تعد

    Glory walked with you in the lush, sprawling shades

    of hopes, never failing to fulfill what they promised.

  15. فيها صباك عطور عبقريّة

    و لي شباب طريف العمر متّئد

    In it, your youth was the perfume of genius,

    while my youth was fresh in age, unhurried.

  16. و نحن بين الدّروب الحاليات يد

    تضمّها في ظلال البرتقال يد

    And we, amidst the adorned pathways, were a hand

    clasped by another hand in the shades of orange trees.

  17. و أستعيدك شعري حين تنشده

    حتّى يقوّم في إنشاده الأود

    I recall you through my poetry when you would recite it,

    until the crookedness in its recitation was straightened.

  18. حبّ أبوك تولاّه و دلّله

    و راح يكرم الإرث الوالد الولد

    A love your father embraced and pampered,

    and the son went on to honor the father's legacy.

  19. يا مبدع السحر إلاّ أنّه كلم

    و ساقي الرأي إلاّ أنّه شهد

    O creator of magic, though it was only words,

    and pourer of wisdom, though it was sweet honey.

  20. يا ناقدا ، حبّه يملي فرائده

    حتّى ليندى حنانا حين ينتقد

    O critic, whose love dictates his precious gems,

    until he exudes tenderness even when he critiques.

  21. يا مانح النّور من تاهت دروبهم

    و مانح الحبّ و الغفران من حقدوا

    O bestower of light to those whose paths are lost,

    and bestower of love and forgiveness to those who harbor hate.

  22. يفنى المزوّر من مجد و من خدعت

    به الشعوب و تبقى أنت و الأبد

    The forged glory perishes, along with those who deceived

    the nations with it, while you and eternity remain.

  23. لن يعدم القبر لا ريّا و لا عبقا

    فلي جفون نديّات و لي كبد

    The grave will not lack quenching nor fragrance,

    for I have dewy eyelids and a burning heart.

  24. أحنو على دمك المطلول ألثمه

    أزكى من الورد ما جادت به الورد

    I lean over your spilled blood to kiss it;

    purer than roses is what the rose-like wounds have yielded.

  25. دماء قلبك إيمان و غالية

    فليس ينكرها بدر و لا أحد

    Your heart's blood is faith and precious musk;

    neither Badr nor Uhud could ever deny it.

  26. دماء قلبك ما من قطرة نزفت

    إلاّ تمنّت سناها نجمة تقد

    Your heart's blood—not a single drop bled

    but a blazing star wished for its radiant glow.

  27. يا من نحبّ و لولا الحبّ لا لعس

    و لا لمى عبق السقيا و لا غيد

    O you whom we love! Were it not for love, there would be no dark-red lips,

    nor sweet fragrant kisses, nor graceful sway.

  28. سهرت في زحمة الجلّى و مزّقني

    أنّي شهدتهم أغفوا و ما سهدوا

    I stayed awake in the crush of grave events, and it tore me apart

    to see them slumbering while they kept no vigil.

  29. و في ضناي و في أحزاني ازدلفوا

    يحرّضون عليّ الدّهر و اتحدوا

    And in my sickness and my sorrows they drew near,

    inciting fate against me, united in their plotting.

  30. حتى بكت محنتي من ظلمهم و غدت

    بالدّمع تنهش من قلبي و تزدرد

    Until my very ordeal wept at their cruelty, and began

    to bite into my heart with tears and devour it.

  31. أمّاه ، دمعك تبكي من مواجعه

    شمّ البواذخ و الأفلاك ترتعد

    O Mother, from the agony of your tears

    the towering peaks weep, and the celestial spheres tremble.

  32. أمّاه لم يبق لي روح فأغدقه

    على أساك و لا دمع و لا كبد

    O Mother, I have no soul left to pour out

    over your sorrow, nor tears, nor a heart.

  33. تطوف عينك في الزوار سائلة

    عن الحبيب الذي ولّى و تفتقد

    Your eyes roam among the visitors, asking

    about the beloved who has departed, searching in vain.

  34. و طاف ثكلك في عدن فهل سألت

    مساحب النّور أين النّور و الرّغد

    Your bereavement roamed in Eden; did it ask

    the trails of light where the light and bliss have gone?

  35. ثكل الأمومة في التسعين حين بكى

    عند الملائك في جنّانهم سجدوا

    A mother's bereavement at ninety—when it wept,

    the angels in their heavens bowed down in reverence.

  36. ثكل الأمومة عند الله حرمته

    كحرمة الحقّ لا ستر و لا بعد

    A mother's bereavement has a sanctity before God

    like the sanctity of Truth: with no veil and no distance.

  37. ثكل الأمومة عند الله فاتحة

    من الكتاب و إيمان و معتقد

    A mother's bereavement before God is the Opening

    of the Book, and it is faith and creed.

  38. ثكل الأمومة حفّ الأنبياء به

    يهدهدون من الآلام و احتشدوا

    A mother's bereavement—the prophets surrounded it,

    rocking the pains to sleep, gathering in multitudes.

  39. يدعو فتفتح أبوا ب السماء له

    و يمسح الدمعتين الواحد الأحد

    It calls out, and the doors of heaven open for it,

    and the One, the Singular God, wipes away its two tears.

  40. و أنت أمّ جميل أيّ نازلة

    لم تبق رفدا لحزن جاء يرتفد

    And you, O mother of Jamil! What a calamity

    that left no support for any sorrow seeking aid.

  41. ما قبل يومك يوم رحت أشهده

    له لواء على الأحزان منعقد

    Never before your day have I witnessed a day

    whose banner was so firmly tied to sorrows.

  42. لبنان أين ربيع كنت أيكته

    يبكي الرّبيع إذا جافى و يفتقد

    Lebanon, where is a spring whose thicket you once were?

    Spring weeps when it is estranged, and feels the loss.

  43. لا الشمّ كالعهد فيه لهفة و قرى

    على النسور و لا الأمواج و الزبد

    The lofty peaks are not as they used to be, full of longing and hospitality

    for the eagles, nor are the waves and the sea-foam.

  44. لا الأرز بعد نوانا مائس عطر

    و لا الغصون عليها الطائر الغرد

    The cedars, after our parting, no longer sway with perfume,

    nor do the branches hold the singing bird.

  45. جيرانك الأنجم الزهراء عاتبة

    و كلّ نجم حزين ثاكل حرد

    Your neighbors, the radiant stars, are reproachful,

    and every star is sorrowful, bereaved, and aggrieved.

  46. يطلّ فيك دم للنور بعد دم

    و لا حماة و لا ثأر و لا قود

    Blood is shed for the light upon you, blood after blood,

    yet there are no defenders, no vengeance, and no retribution.

  47. لي فيك شعر رواه العطر فازدحمت

    منك السّفوح على ريّاه و النجد

    I have poetry in you narrated by fragrance, so your slopes

    and highlands crowded around its sweet scent.

  48. لبنان فيك قبور للسّيوف حمى

    هان ففي كلّ قبر صارم فرد

    Lebanon, within you are graves for swords—a sanctuary

    that grew slighted, for in every grave lies a solitary blade.

  49. تألّقوا في سماء المجد ما خمدت

    رغم العواصف ذكراهم و ما خمدوا

    They shone in the sky of glory; their memory

    was not extinguished despite the storms, nor did they extinguish.

  50. حتّى إذا ضفرت غارا لمفرقهم

    أنامل الخلد زان الخلد من خلدوا

    Until, when the fingers of eternity wove laurel for their brows,

    eternity itself was adorned by those who became immortal.

  51. أبا جميل .. و قربى بيننا اتّصلت

    إلى الجنان .. فدان و هو مبتعد

    O Abu Jamil... a kinship between us has connected

    up to the heavens; so close he is, even while far away.

  52. عدنان عندك في النعمى و لي كبد

    عليه بالجمر و الأحزان يتّقد

    Adnan is with you in bliss, while I have a heart

    that burns for him with embers and sorrows.

  53. أحبابنا في جنان الله قد نعموا

    لقد شقينا بهم لكنّهم سعدوا

    Our loved ones have found bliss in the gardens of God;

    we have suffered for them, but they have found happiness.

  54. هشّوا إلى ابن أخيهم و هو بينهم

    بحاليات صباه كوكب يقد

    They smiled warmly at their nephew, who is among them

    in the ornaments of his youth, a blazing star.

  55. يا للنجوم قديمات السنى نزلت

    على قراها نجوم طلّع جدد

    Oh, the stars of ancient radiance! Upon their hospitality

    have descended newly rising stars.

  56. حمّلت عدنان أطياب الحنين فهل

    أدّى أمانة ما أشكو و ما أجد

    I burdened Adnan with the perfumes of my longing; did he

    deliver the trust of what I complain of and what I feel?

  57. لم أرثه و هو روحي فارقت جسدي

    و كيف يبكي و يرثي روحه الجسد

    I did not mourn him, for he is my soul that left my body;

    and how can the body weep and mourn its own soul?

  58. ألمّ بالقبر أغليه و ألثمه

    و حولي الساخران : الغيب و الأبد

    I visit the grave, holding it dear and kissing it,

    while around me two mockers stand: the unseen and eternity.

  59. أحبّتي كلّما غامت طيوفهم

    هتفت : لا تبتعدوا عنّي و قد بعدوا

    My loved ones, whenever their phantoms grow cloudy,

    I cry out: Do not go far from me! Yet they have gone far.

  60. روح الشهيد كنور الله ما همدت

    لبث قليلا الظلاّم قد همدوا

    The martyr's soul is like God's light—it never fades.

    Wait but a little, and the oppressors shall fade away.

  61. حرب على الكفر و الطغيان يضرمها

    رأي على الحجّة الزّهراء يعتمد

    A war upon disbelief and tyranny, ignited by

    an opinion relying on radiant, clear proof.

  62. رموك غدرا و لو صالوا مجابهة

    لمزّق الصائدين الضيغم الحرد

    They shot you in treachery; had they attacked face-to-face,

    the furious lion would have torn the hunters apart.

  63. سلاحك النّور و الإسلام وحدهما

    و منهما العون عند الفتح و المدد

    Your only weapons were the light and Islam,

    and from them comes the aid in victory, and the reinforcements.

  64. رسالة من أبي الزهراء خالدة

    عديدك الفاتح المنصور و العدد

    An eternal message from the father of Al-Zahra;

    you are the victorious conqueror, the multitude and the numbers.

  65. حتّى إذا انهزمت شتّى فلولهم

    و مرّغ الجبن زهو الحقّ و الصيد

    Until, when their various remnants were defeated,

    and the pride of truth and noble men rolled cowardice in the dust,

  66. أشرفت و الدم شمس – راح يحجبها

    بكفّه و يواري وجهها الرّمد

    You looked out, and the blood was a sun—the bleary-eyed tried to veil it

    with his palm and hide its face.

  67. لا يخدعنّك زهو الظالمين و إن

    تاهت على الفلك الأبراج و العمد

    Let not the vanity of the oppressors deceive you, even if

    their towers and pillars arrogantly reach the cosmos.

  68. ثلاثة لهوان الدّهر قد خلقوا

    ألظالمون و عير الحيّ و الوتد

    Three were created for the humiliations of fate:

    the oppressors, the tribe's pack ass, and the tent peg.

  69. تكبّر الحقّ أن تلقاه مضطهدا

    ألظلم في عنفوان الظلم مضطهد

    Truth is too great to be found oppressed;

    it is oppression, in the very prime of its oppression, that is oppressed.

  70. شمائل الصّيد من قومي معطّرة

    بمترف الحق لا غالوا و لا جحدوا

    The noble traits of my people are perfumed

    with the luxury of truth; they neither exaggerated nor denied.

  71. سمحاء لم تدر تهريجا و لا عقدا

    فكيف شوّهها التهريج و العقد

    Tolerant and generous, knowing neither buffoonery nor complexes;

    so how did buffoonery and complexes deform them?

  72. تنكرّوا لقديم المجد و هو ضحى

    يؤذي العيون و لا يؤذي الضحى الرمد

    They denied the ancient glory, though it is a morning sun

    that hurts their eyes, while ophthalmia does not hurt the sun.

  73. خطوبهم لا خطوب الدّهر ضاربة

    على العروبة إن حلّوا و إن عقدوا

    Their own calamities, not the calamities of fate, strike

    against Arabism, whether they untie or bind.

  74. ألهانئون بسلم لا حماة له

    فداء من زحموا الجلّى و من نهدوا

    Those rejoicing in a peace with no protectors

    should be the ransom for those who plunged into grave matters and advanced.

  75. القدس سيناء لحد هبّ منتفضا

    به الكمأة و خيل الحقّ تطّرد

    Jerusalem and Sinai are a grave that has risen, shaking off dust,

    with the brave warriors and the horses of truth charging forth.

  76. و رمل سيناء لحد هبّ منتفضا

    بكلّ من سقطوا غدرا و ما لحدوا

    And the sand of Sinai is a grave that has risen, shaking

    with all who fell by treachery and were never buried.

  77. يصيح ألف صدى في الرّمل منتظرا

    أن يستثير الصحارى فارس نجد

    A thousand echoes cry out in the sand, waiting

    for a valiant knight of Najd to rouse the deserts.

  78. أرى الأذلاّء و الهيجاء ساخرة

    توعّدوا بالوغى لكنّهم وعدوا

    I see the humiliated ones, while the battle mocks them;

    they threatened war, but they only made promises.

  79. ردّ الأباة على الطغيان غارته

    و لم يسلّموا ظبى لكنّهم حقدوا

    The proud ones repelled the tyrant's raid;

    they did not surrender their blades, but rather harbored their wrath.

  80. و كيف أرضى بقوم ألّهوا صنما

    و كفّروه و ذمّوا بعد أن حمدوا

    And how can I be pleased with a people who deified an idol,

    then declared it an unbeliever, and condemned it after they had praised it?

  81. حتى إذا راع قصف الرّعد من سمعوا

    و راع برق الدّجى أحلام من شهدوا

    Until, when the thunder's crash terrified those who heard,

    and the lightning in the dark terrified the dreams of those who witnessed,

  82. تكشّف النقع عن أشلاء طاغية

    و راح يخطر في غاباته الأسد

    The dust of battle cleared to reveal the torn limbs of a tyrant,

    and the lion went back to strutting in his forests.

  83. أبا جميل أناجي فيك حالية

    من الشمائل أغليها و أفتقد

    O Abu Jamil, in you I commune with an adorned set

    of noble traits that I cherish and now desperately miss.

  84. تحوّلت أفقا غير الذي عرفوا

    و أنجما في الدّجى غير التي رصدوا

    You have transformed into a horizon unlike the one they knew,

    and into stars in the darkness unlike those they observed.

  85. فسلّم الفلك الأسمى على فلك

    فيه الكواكب و الأسحار و الرأد

    So let the highest heaven greet a heaven

    in which reside the planets, the dawns, and the gentle morning light.

  86. هذي السماء كتاب من شتيت رؤى

    فكلّ نجم بها رأى و معتقد

    This sky is a book of scattered visions;

    every star within it is an opinion and a belief.

  87. لي عالم يغمر الدنيا و تغمره

    و عالم عطر الأسرار منفرد

    I have a world that floods the earth and is flooded by it,

    and an isolated world, fragrant with secrets.

  88. تخفّ روحي لحاقا في حتوفكم

    و يحكم القدر العاتي فتتّئد

    My soul hastens to follow you into your demise,

    but arrogant fate decrees, and so it is held back.

  89. ألعيش بعدكم لغو فلا طرب

    فيه و لا أمل هان و لا كمد

    Life after you is but vain talk; there is no joy

    in it, nor a peaceful hope, nor even sorrow.

  90. فيا شقاء فتى آماله رجعت

    لأمسه و انطوى يوم و مات غد

    Oh, the misery of a youth whose hopes have returned

    to his yesterday; a day has folded, and a tomorrow has died.
