1. غنّ يا بلبل فوق الدّوح غنّ

    أنت أولى بالهوى و الشّعر منّي

    Sing, O nightingale, above the branches, sing,

    You are more worthy of love and poetry than I.

  2. لك سحر مثل سحري عجب

    أترى عندك حزنا مثل حزني

    You possess a wondrous magic just like mine,

    Do you, I wonder, have a sorrow like my sorrow?

  3. فترنّم بأناشيد الهوى

    ناعما ما شئت من غصن لغصن

    So chant the anthems of love,

    Moving gently as you please from branch to branch,

  4. و تعلّم كيف يبكي شاعر

    ضاع ما بين صدود و تجنّ

    And learn how a poet weeps,

    Lost between rejection and false accusations.

  5. إنّما الدنيا و في أمثالها

    عبر الدنيا و أصداء التمنّي

    Indeed, the world and what resembles it,

    Are the lessons of the world and the echoes of wishing.

  6. غارة لم أهيّب جمرها

    فنبا سيفي و لم يسلم مجنّي

    A raid whose embers I did not dread,

    Yet my sword recoiled, and my shield was not spared.

  7. ربّ دهياء أناخت بالحمى

    غاب حاميه ? و خطب مرجحنّ

    Many a dark calamity has settled in the sanctuary,

    Its protector absent? And a heavy affliction.

  8. بين سمع و عيان ، ليتني

    لا ترى عيني و لا تسمع أذني

    Between hearing and seeing, I wish that I

    Had eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear.

  9. ما على لحني و قد أرسلته

    يلهب الدنيا على الغاضب لحني

    There is no blame on my melody, having sent it forth,

    My melody inflames the world against the wrathful.

  10. فإذا لم أستثرها همما

    لا ورى زندي و لا ظلّل ركني

    For if I do not rouse them as resolves,

    May my fire-striker not spark, nor my pillar provide shade.

  11. غنّ يا بلبل فوق الدوح غنّ

    أنت أولى بالهوى و الشعر منّي

    Sing, O nightingale, above the branches, sing,

    You are more worthy of love and poetry than I.

  12. لست تدري الهمّ بالدنيا فخذ

    أيّها الطير دروس الهمّ عنّي

    You do not know worldly sorrow, so take,

    O bird, the lessons of sorrow from me.

  13. تاج هارون خبا لألاؤه

    فبكت دجلة حزنا و الفرات

    The crown of Harun, its brilliance has faded,

    So the Tigris wept in sorrow, and the Euphrates.

  14. وذرى الزّهراء خرّت بعدما

    طاولت زهر النجوم النيّرات

    And the peaks of Al-Zahra collapsed after

    They had reached the radiant, shining stars.

  15. وبنو مروان ولّوا وانطووا

    و تخلّوا عن متون الصافنات

    And the sons of Marwan have turned away and vanished,

    And abandoned the backs of purebred steeds.

  16. قل لجيش الروم ماذا تتّقي

    طاح ريب الدهر غدرا بالغزاة

    Say to the army of the Byzantines: What do you fear?

    The vicissitudes of time have treacherously struck down the conquerors.

  17. لا بنو العبّاس في زخم الوغى

    لا ولا أبناء حمدان الأباة

    Neither the sons of Abbas are in the clash of battle,

    No, nor the proud sons of Hamdan.

  18. عقلت بين خيام المنحنى

    و الفراتين عتاق السابقات

    Hobbled among the tents of the river-bend

    And the two Euphrates are the noble racing mares.

  19. و هي الأسياف في أغمادها

    صدئت يا ويلتي للمرهفات !

    While the swords remain in their sheaths,

    Rusted—oh, woe is me for the sharp blades!

  20. غنّ يا بلبل فوق الدّوح غنّ

    أنت أولى بالهوى والشعر منّي

    Sing, O nightingale, above the branches, sing,

    You are more worthy of love and poetry than I.

  21. لست تدري الهمّ بالدنيا فخذ

    أيّها الطير دروس الهمّ عنّي

    You do not know worldly sorrow, so take,

    O bird, the lessons of sorrow from me.

  22. قف على اليرموك و اخشع باكيا

    و تيمّم من صعيد القادسيّة

    Stand at Yarmouk and humble yourself, weeping,

    And seek the soil of Al-Qadisiyyah,

  23. تربة طيبة طاهرة

    و قبور من حيا الدمع رويّه

    A good, pure earth,

    And graves watered by the rain of tears.

  24. ها هنا مثوى الصناديد الألى

    قد لووا قسرا عنان الجاهليّة

    Here lies the resting place of the valiant heroes who

    Forcefully twisted the reins of ignorance.

  25. دوّخوا الروم وثلّوا عرشها

    وطووا حمر البنود الفارسيّة

    They subdued the Byzantines and toppled their throne,

    And folded the red Persian banners.

  26. و قضوا الأحجار والثمه ثرى

    طاهرا واعقر على القبر المطيّة

    And they shattered the stones, so kiss it as a soil,

    That is pure, and slaughter your mount over the grave.

  27. يا قبورا محيت واندثرت

    أنت نبراس الهدى والوطنيّة

    O graves that have been erased and obliterated,

    You are the beacon of guidance and patriotism.

  28. لك من دمعي إذا ضنّ الحيا

    ديمة تبكي ووطفاء روّيه

    You have from my tears, if the rain is stingy,

    A weeping downpour and a heavy, drenching cloud.

  29. غنّ يا بلبل فوق الدّوح غنّ

    أنت أولى بالهوى والشّعر منّي

    Sing, O nightingale, above the branches, sing,

    You are more worthy of love and poetry than I.

  30. لست تدري الهمّ بالدنيا فخذ

    أيّها الطير دروس الهمّ عنّي

    You do not know worldly sorrow, so take,

    O bird, the lessons of sorrow from me.

  31. قد رأوا ليلاي تذري دمعها

    كرّم الله الدموع الطاهره

    They saw my Layla shedding her tears,

    May God honor those pure tears.

  32. حرس الله جفونا عطّرت

    بالندى تلك الخدود الناضره

    May God guard eyelids that have perfumed

    With dew those radiant cheeks.

  33. كفكفي دمعك لا يشهده

    ناظر حتى النجوم الزاهره

    Wipe your tears, lest they be seen by

    Any onlooker, even the shining stars.

  34. إنّ لي يا ابنة ودّي همّة

    تخضد الخطب ونفسا ثائره

    For I have, O daughter of my affection, a resolve

    That shatters calamity, and a rebellious soul.

  35. وأراني في غد مقتحما

    مستظلا بالسيوف الباتره

    And I see myself tomorrow charging ahead,

    Seeking shade beneath the sharp swords,

  36. ملقيا نفسي في غمرتها

    كيفما دارت هناك الدائره

    Throwing myself into its depths,

    However the battle's tide may turn there.

  37. فإذا متّ غريبا نائيا

    و أنا في التسع بعد العاشره

    So if I die a stranger, far away,

    While I am only nineteen,

  38. أذكريني واحفطي عهد الهوى

    واندبي شؤم الجدود العاثره

    Remember me and keep the covenant of love,

    And mourn the ill omen of stumbling fortunes.

  39. لست تالله محبّا غادرا

    لا تكوني بعد موتي غادره

    By God, I am not a treacherous lover,

    Do not be treacherous after my death.

    أنت أولى بالهوى والشعر منّي

    Sing, O nightingale, above the branches, sing,

    You are more worthy of love and poetry than I.
